Didn't even notice with how busy I've been other stuff that has nothing to do with this, but this instance (at this domain) is one month old as of yesterday.  Time flies. #SelfHosted #GoToSocial #Fediverse

I recently discovered ntfy.sh and it is brilliant in its simplicity. I am currently rewriting my bash scripts to drop AWS SNS in favor of it. Getting a direct push notification to my phone (and not only this) via a simple curl command is so much cleaner than setting up IAM roles and SNS topics. I still absolutely love email as a primary protocol, but my inbox really does not need to know every single time a cron job finishes successfully 😅 #SelfHosted #Bash #DevOps #Linux #ntfy #HomeLab #AWS #Fediverse #Linux

So I have a weird problem with my #SelfHosted Masotdon/Glitchsoc instance: when I log in from my PC I get the ‘Something went wrong on our end’ pachyderm smashing on keyboard error. I’ve tried a clean install (of the client system), Firefox, Edge, Chrome. Client access through Ivory is unaffected as is accessing it with Safari on my iPad. I’ve tried regenerating my secrets keys. Re-running the database migration. No joy. It’s a single-user instance running with #Yunohost. #MastoAdmin

Latest quarterly FreeBSD package upgrade broke my Nextcloud 😮‍💨

Post mortem: The new version of php85-pdo_pgsql is now compiled against PostgreSQL 18, not 17. So pkg upgrade removed postgresql17-server, leaving Nextcloud dysfunctional without a database.

Solution:

  • Reinstalled postgresql17-server
  • Dumped the db with pg_dump
  • Installed postgresql18-server & php85-pdo_pgsql
  • Copied over pg_hba.conf & postgresql.conf
  • Created empty db/user in PG18
  • Imported the db dump
  • Ran occ maintenance:data-fingerprint

Restarted php-fpm & nginx

All fine again. But that was unpleasant 🙂

I finally defeated the final boss of my backup migration to Proton Drive. For months, I have been trying to sync my 500GB media library (around 80k files) to Proton Drive. Every single time, the sync crashed with the exact same error: "1 item failed to backup." The only clue I had was a blurry thumbnail named "Asset 1". No date, no metadata, no search tags. I was so frustrated that I even asked Proton support to completely wipe my encrypted volume so I could start from scratch. The result was exactly the same. Finding this file became a manual protocol. I spent months periodically scanning through thousands of files just looking for a visual match to that tiny thumbnail. I finally found it today. It was an old scan from 2017. It was completely frozen - uneditable, unindexed, and gave an error when I tried to export it from my phone. I managed to track it down via macOS. When I forced an export there, the truth came out: it was not an image at all. It was a .pdf file somehow saved into the photo gallery, and it was silently breaking the entire upload queue. Removing it fixed everything. The sync is finally 100% complete. The relief of finally closing this mental background process is unmatched. #ProtonDrive #SelfHosted #DataHoarder #TechSupport #Backup #TechPhilosophy #DataMigration #Fediverse

Saw this tip on Reddit and had to share. If you use #Unraid with the AppData backup plugin set the compression to "Yes, Multicore" and it will reduce the backup time significantly with the increase in CPU of course. Cut my backup time by over 50%. #SelfHosted #HomeLab https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/comments/1sg0nac/pro_tip_set_use_compression_to_yes_multicore_in/

I was running some AWS CLI commands today and found this string in the output: "AccountCreatedDate": "2015-03-11T15:06:45Z" I completely missed the 11-year anniversary last month. Since I was born in 1995, I was only 19 when I opened this account. It is wild to realize I have been tied to Big Tech infrastructure for over a third of my life without really thinking about it. Back then, the cloud felt like the ultimate solution. But today, my main goal is to move away from it. Funny how the background processes of our digital lives can run for over a decade before we finally audit them. #AWS #BigTech #SelfHosted #HomeLab #Privacy #TechPhilosophy #Blog #Thougts #Devops

Setting up #mastodon email sending using good old ( #selfhosted !) SMTP server feels like trying to recover grandma's pasta recipe from torn scraps and having to test each quantity to find the perfect match. But at least that's a two year old issue resolved.

Update no one asked for: I just learned about Firefly3, a budget app that can be self hosted. I've added it to my homelab set up. https://codeberg.org/keithnator3000/homelab Feedback on what to host and make myset up more secure and pro is always welcome. It is always a good day to learn! #Homelab #Selfhosted #Budget #Firefly #Firefly3 #PersonalProjects

I wrote up my entire backup strategy for my across FreeBSD and Linux:

  • ZFS snapshots with sanoid
  • Off-site replication via syncoid to rsync.net (encrypted at rest)
  • Proxmox Backup Server fronting Backblaze B2 for VMs
  • A Podman trick for backing up RHEL hosts without native packages
  • Dead man’s switch monitoring
  • Quarterly restore tests recorded with asciinema

Real configs included.

Is someone out here using the notebook as the server and connect to it on the go? I know that @ChrisLAS@podcastindex.social does something similar with his van but I'm more curios about a mobile workstation centred workflow where the laptops acts as the server for the devices (mostly the phone). Edit: removed a faulty profile link an updated the wording. #selfhosted #offlinefirst
