So I have a weird problem with my #SelfHosted Masotdon/Glitchsoc instance: when I log in from my PC I get the ‘Something went wrong on our end’ pachyderm smashing on keyboard error. I’ve tried a clean install (of the client system), Firefox, Edge, Chrome. Client access through Ivory is unaffected as is accessing it with Safari on my iPad. I’ve tried regenerating my secrets keys. Re-running the database migration. No joy. It’s a single-user instance running with #Yunohost. #MastoAdmin

We're adding mastodon.cloud to our #Fediblock list due to the instance seemingly being abandoned with open signups and zero moderation. The burden of us suspending accounts locally is not practical when the instance is out of date and not being maintained. It's been flagged since August last year - https://social.growyourown.services/@FediTips/115027342813989021 so I don't see it likely that anything is suddenly going to change. #MastodonAppUK #Universeodon #FediMedi #MastoAdmin

I've stated numerous times that I'm not a fan of the new tag pills and boosts and replies toggle, but I tried my best to make it more manageable in my UI. I'd rather not make radical back-end changes to my fork. OG on the left. Mine on the right. #MastodonBirdUI #BirdUI #Mastodon #MastoAdmin

Just finished optimizing and checking things after being away from this machine in particular for a while. Our server stack could theoretically handle 5k more registered users and about 1500-2000 monthly active users before we'd need to start thinking about scaling up. Right now, we have 889 users and around 410 monthly active ones and we're running at roughly 25-30% capacity. Plenty of space to grow. We're federating with nearly 42000 other servers, which is actually the heaviest part of running an instance, not the local users. Every boost, reply, and follow across the fediverse adds work for our servers. It was never my intention to grow this server this much or even have this many users, but now we have regular people, authors, political parties, organizations, YouTubers, and more. I'm still amazed about this. Yet I'm keeping a low profile because, even though we have our own admin team, at the end of the day this is still my hobby project organized by me and my wife. That said, I've done my best to keep things as flexible as possible, and our finances are stable. I'm really glad my "hobby project" has brought so much joy to so many people. If you know someone looking for a Mastodon home, we've got room 🏠 #MementoMoriSocial #MastoAdmin

The Universeodon relay is now back up and running and migrated to our new environment. I'll keep an eye for a little longer just to make sure everything continues to work as expected but it should be fine as far as I can see. #MastoAdmin

"Chrome and other major browsers mitigated this immediate threat by deploying X25519MLKEM768. Now the rest of the world needs to catch up by adding support for this post-quantum safe key exchange on the server side." i hope #mastoadmin folks update to OpenSSL 3.5+ asap https://www.feistyduck.com/newsletter/issue_135_web_pki_reimagined_with_merkle_tree_certificates

Jedenfalls beschwerte sich der Update-Prozess beim Befehl SKIP_POST_DEPLOYMENT_MIGRATIONS=true RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails db:migrate über connection to server on socket "/var/run/postgresql/.s.PGSQL.5432" failed: No such file or directory (PG::ConnectionBad). Tatsächlich fehlt die Datei. Ein systemctl restart postgres behebt den Fehler, danach kann ich das Update abschließen. Ziemlich eigenartig... #MastoAdmin

It’s funny how some people say they joined because our instance is Finnish. It’s true that I’m Finnish and our servers are located in Finland, but we don’t promote ourselves as a Finnish instance, nor are we otherwise tied to Finland.

English is my second and quite dominant language, and half of my family tree is Australian. In short, all cultures and languages are welcome here.

Languages currently used on mementomori.social:

  1. Finnish
  2. English
  3. French
  4. Swedish
  5. German
  6. Korean
  7. Dutch
  8. Catalan

Our Mastodon instance “burningboard.net” now internally ONLY uses the Internet Protocol in Version 6. I did successfully migrate away from any RFC1918 addresses in any of the internal infrastructure connections.

Nginx -> Mastodon: IPv6 Mastodon -> PostgreSQL: IPv6 Mastodon -> Opensearch: IPv6 Mastodon -> Sidekiq: IPv6 Mastodon -> Loki: IPv6 Sidekiq -> PostgreSQL: IPv6 Prometheus -> Mastodon: IPv6

All using globally routed unique addresses and proper routing and packet filtering from “pf” (FreeBSD).

Outbound connections to legacy hosts (for example for Federation) uses NAT64 over Tayga.

Inbound the Nginx is the only component, that supports IPv4 on NAT on a best-effort approach. But I refuse to put a lot of work into this. We have 2026 and it’s a dying, smelly protocol, that I don’t even monitor anymore.

If someone looks at the Firewall rules.. Yes, we do run a (private) Factorio Server on our Mastodon system :factorio:

Just a quick note for #MastoAdmin 's using the #Universeodon Relay. The relay is one of the last things to get moved now onto our new infrastructure, I'm about to start making the configuration changes and DNS updates which will mean our new load balancer infrastructure will start to serve requests for the relay as well as finally supporting IPv6 properly. Later today I will then need to migrate the relay DB and config onto a new server so there will be a short outage later on to the relay while I do this.

Welcome to MastodonBD! While our primary focus is Bangladesh - its people, culture, technology, and public discourse - the instance is open to everyone, regardless of location. We encourage respectful dialogue, diverse perspectives, and meaningful connections across borders. If you believe in open social networks and constructive conversation, you are welcome here. Let’s build this space thoughtfully, together. #fediverse #mastodon #mastoadmin #bangladesh #dhaka #asia
