This means that I can’t set up automations in the Apple Home app like ‘if power consumption drops then send a push notification’. Yes, I can always use Homey or Home Assistant, but that negates the point of trying to keep things on one ecosystem. #ikea #grillplats #smarthome #matter

In further IKEA smart home adventures, I also picked up some of the Grillplats smart plugs. There’s both good and bad sides to these…

  • They are seriously cheap.

  • You can get them bundled with a smart switch at a further discount, but they don’t work with each other out of the box.

  • Apple’s Home app won’t give you energy consumption info. For that, you need to use IKEA’s own hub and app (or a third party one like Homey or Home Asst).

I like ZigBee for Home-Automation 🙂

Hardware from many different manufacturers, all compatible with each other.

  • Philips
  • Ikea
  • Sonoff
  • Xiaomi

No proprietary bridges, no cloud, no vendor lock-in. Just some free and open source software (Zigbee2MQTT / Home Assistant) and a tiny USB dongle (ConBee II) as a network coordinator.

All meshing nicely and every grid-powered device effectively extends my network’s range by relaying datagrams.
