I got frustrated for the last time with website rendering and UI in Safari, and so in two days this week, I went through two browsers. First I went to Opera, based on using it decades ago, but it was clunky. Then I remember hearing about Vivaldi Browser and wow, I love it! @ppb1701@ppb.social Connect any iPhone to something that monitors traffic — for example, a DNS service such as AdGuard DNS or Control D. You will notice that your iPhone makes more outbound connections than Microsoft Windows 11. Anytime an Apple user tells me that Apple is better for privacy, I can’t help but roll my eyes and think about how they’ve been tricked into believing that. #iPhone #Apple #iOS #macOS

What services/tools are folks using for cross-platform file sharing? My household is cross-platform (wife is on #macOS, I have an old macOS system I keep around, and the rest of my systems are #Linux) and I don't foresee that changing any time soon.

Here are some things that one can add to the analysis of the MacOS TCP timeout clock freeze bug. The code for calculate_tcp_clock() in XNU was changed in May 2025. Older versions of this function (e.g. in xnu-11417) worked quite differently and wouldn't have stopped ticking the clock at 32-bit unsigned integer wraparound. None of #NetBSD, #FreeBSD, nor #OpenBSD share this exact way of doing TCP timeout processing with #XNU. FreeBSD does not have a tcp_now and works off the global 32-bit ticks variable. OpenBSD effectively works off the kernel's system clock, too, but with a randomized offset, and does 64-bit unsigned modular arithmetic. NetBSD uses a distinct 32-bit unsigned tcp_now counter that it simply increments by 1 at regular intervals, and does modular arithmetic subtraction. https://photon.codes/blog/we-found-a-ticking-time-bomb-in-macos-tcp-networking #TCP #MacOS

Apple have committed a number of self-owns lately, but most self-respecting developers still try their best to adhere to certain standards regarding the Mac user experience. @1Password, on the other hand, have taken it upon themselves to ignore the user's specified highlight colour and just make it blue. The stated reason for this is so that it provides 'a more consistent and polished experience across all platforms, ensuring that 1Password looks and feels the same whether you're using it on your Mac, Windows PC, or in your browser'. Decide for yourself how believable this sounds. The jarring visual dissonance that occurs when this bright blue thing pops up when you need to enter a password has to be experienced to be believed. Bad enough that they're jumping onto the 'AI' bandwagon, but this level of ignorance on the part of a major developer about the macOS user experience is stunning. My old Mac Book Pro had all of its passwords reset the other day. Even the one I use to login to the laptop! I wonder if this is a sign that the internal battery is going? Malware scans came up clean. #macos #mystery

I've been exploring @kagihq@mastodon.social's Orion browser for a bit now. Judging from the overall #UX, I'm beginning to think that Orion is a better (fully #macOS-native) browser than Safari. E.g., Safari shows bookmarks in a browser window, and it closes all folders every time you close the window. Orion has a dedicated bookmarks window and remembers all folders’ open/closed states across launches. There are plenty #IxD details like this one, whose design in Orion simply is superior to Safari’s. Well done!

Mulla meni hermo virtuaali-Linuxiin macOSissa. Se oli niin älykömpelö ja kyllästyin siihen nopeasti. Varmaan viikkoon en koskenut siihen ja kypsyttelin ajatusta et pitäiskö sittenkin asentaa se Fedora Asahi Remix Macille dualboottina. Salee vaikee homma. No ei ollut ja oli. Hämmentävin Linux asennus ikinä. Anyway. Ohjeita noudattaen ja vaihe vaiheelta suoritettuna homma sujui loppuun asti. PS. Tässä pystyi valitsemaan KDE Plasman ja GNOMEn väliltä.
