@davidgerard@circumstances.run I mean, if I were eligible to their scheme (company time + age in years ≥ 70) I'd certainly take the money, selliff my #Microsoft shares and move to #Germany and start like an #IT consultancy spechalizing in moving #Corporations from #Windows to #Linux. But I'm neither a Microsoft employee nor shareholder!

Today I found out about Tuba - a Linux desktop client for Mastodon. Ok it is not Qt but runs totally fine for me. It is way more clean then the default fully cluttered mess of a Mastodon Webpage. Can recommend: https://tuba.geopjr.dev/ #tuba #mastodon #linux

Does Linux have an equivalent to "compress to save space" from Windows? I don't need to save space, I want it for a different purpose.

As I mentioned in the title, I’m not looking to save space, I want to test something. In Windows, you could use this option on a folder and still access the contents and run executables while keeping the folder and it’s contents compressed. The benefit to doing this, outside of saving space, is that files could potentially be accessed faster on slower storage devices. As I’ve been trying to get the most out of some old storage devices I have, I think that something like this would be a great option for this. The only problem is that I’ve tried looking online for a way to do this but search engines are terrible. So, I’m posting about this here in case someone knows of a way to do this.

So I’m testing out #Ubuntu2604LTS on an intel #thinkpad T14 gen 4 and the standby battery life is atrocious. Went to bed around 10pm, closed the lid and when I woke up in the morning it was completely dead. Am I missing something. I thought newer kernels handled sleep and power settings better? This is borderline unusable. #linux #battery #standby #ubuntu

The scheduling service Cal has shut down its #opensource program because it views it as a security risk now that LLMs are much more capable and can be deployed to scan the code base 24/7 https://www.zdnet.com/article/ai-security-worries-force-company-to-abandon-open-source/ #linux #freebsd

We wrote "esperto-wiimote", a Wiimote remapper with good IR tracking and complex key combos

A friend and I wanted to use a Wiimote as a PC remote for movie night. We have tried various existing software, but all had some issues: some were old Xorg-only programs, some didn’t have proper IR tracking, and all were abandoned by the developer. But most of all, no software (even modern remappers like InputPlumber) had any support for key combos. So, we set out to write our own. Some of our requirements were: Key combos (the wiimote has only few buttons) Proper IR tracking The ability to enable or disable the IR with a key combo Having no observable latency We first developed “esperto” a powerful system for describing and detecting key combos, which we implemented in this library. It is generic so it can be used on pretty much anything that needs combo detection. At first, we intended to plug that into InputPlumber, but then decided it would be easier to do everything ourselves. So, we ported this IR tracking algorithm from Hector Martin to rust, and put it together with our esperto library, and this is the result. It is extremely fast (mostly dominated by the actual latency of evdev’s and uinput’s UAPI), and it meets all of our requirements. And we already have ideas for future improvements, for example how to add support for wiimote extensions.

@FediFollows@social.growyourown.services you ought to include the contacts of #opensource champions like the #developers of #linux #distros like #mxlinux #linuxMint #debian #archlinux, #developers of some prime #mastodon instances, #piefed instances, #codeberg , #github and email services like #mailo and #proton. That way, we would be able to reach out to them through #socialmedia whenever we need their support. This informal channel is oftentimes better than your regular email.
