Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive are convenient services that millions use daily. But behind that convenience lies a cost that few acknowledge: your files are stored on servers owned by corporations that have full access to your data. They analyze your documents, your photos, your spreadsheets—for product improvement, targeted advertising, or simply because they can. If you store sensitive information—business correspondence, medical records, legal documents, financial statements—the risk is even greater. Google can freeze your account at any moment, and with it, access to everything stored there. This has already happened to thousands of users worldwide. Nextcloud is the answer. It is open-source software for building your own cloud server on your own hardware. Your files on your hardware, under your control, without any third parties. Nextcloud has evolved far beyond simple file storage: File sync across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android with versioning and sharing Online document editing through Collabora or OnlyOffice Calendar and contacts via CalDAV/CardDAV Video conferencing and chat Photo backup with face and object recognition Email client, notes, kanban boards, forms, and hundreds more apps through the app store Hardware requirements are surprisingly modest. For 1-5 users, a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM and an SSD works perfectly. An old laptop from 2015 or later is another excellent option. A VPS for a few dollars per month is ideal for those who prefer not to keep hardware at home. Installation via Docker Compose or Nextcloud AIO takes 15-30 minutes. Desktop and mobile clients provide automatic sync like Dropbox. Calendar and contacts sync without Google or Apple. Self-hosted means self-responsibility: strong passwords, two-factor authentication, SSL certificates, regular updates, backups, and firewall configuration. But the reward is priceless: certainty that your data is truly yours. Nextcloud in 2026 is mature, stable, and feature-rich. It does not fall short of Google Drive in functionality. In privacy and control, it surpasses it by orders of magnitude. Start with Nextcloud AIO on an inexpensive VPS. In one or two hours, you will have a fully functional cloud storage system open only to you. Latest quarterly FreeBSD package upgrade broke my Nextcloud 😮‍💨

Post mortem: The new version of php85-pdo_pgsql is now compiled against PostgreSQL 18, not 17. So pkg upgrade removed postgresql17-server, leaving Nextcloud dysfunctional without a database.

Solution:

  • Reinstalled postgresql17-server
  • Dumped the db with pg_dump
  • Installed postgresql18-server & php85-pdo_pgsql
  • Copied over pg_hba.conf & postgresql.conf
  • Created empty db/user in PG18
  • Imported the db dump
  • Ran occ maintenance:data-fingerprint

Restarted php-fpm & nginx

All fine again. But that was unpleasant 🙂

But eventually #NextCloud got happily moved to #OpenShift, along with #collabora and new member notify_push! I wonder if " High-performance backend" would be worth the effort? I tried talk video calls, but clients could not connect from other sides of NAT.

Alrighty, everything set up for the #GNOME showcase at the hardware bazaar meetup later. A GNOME OS laptop, a #phosh tablet and phone, all connected with each other via #p2panda (via Reflection as a demo), #Nextcloud (calendar, contacts, files) and #Valent/KDE Connect (notifications, clipboard etc.) :)

@HolosSocial@mastodon.social I am so disappointed #nextcloud didn't push more efforts into their fediverse social app. It is already the place where we store things we might want to share 😢 But your idea with Holos really makes sense too. Looking forward to seeing it live 💪

Wir haben bisher in #nextcloud Maps benutzt. Für unsere Zwecke fand ich das ok (https://apps.nextcloud.com/apps/maps) Maps wird nicht mehr aktualisiert. Welche Alternativen gibt es für Nextcloud sowohl zur Verschlagwortung von Fotos, wie auch Darstellung auf einer Karte? Bonus: Einfache Bedienung für alle!

That was close 😓 The SSD in my server was down to 2% life, at 0% it goes into read only mode.. or just outright fails. It definitely wouldn't boot anymore. I bought a replacement drive, an Intel data centre SSD. I cloned the server drive to the new one today, thankfully #nextcloud is back up and running. Make sure you make #backups people, particularly if you #selfhost it will work until it doesn't. I should have received warnings about the drive condition, oh well.

Wenn man für den 3D-Druck selbst konstruieren möchte und nur zwei Kriterien ansetzt: Linux und keine fremde Cloud, also Lokal nutzbar oder/und eigene Cloud, wie z.B. Nextcloud - dann bleibt eigentlich nur FreeCAD übrig. Das ist echt sehr traurig. #cad #freecad #linux #opensource #3d #3ddruck #nextcloud

Heute bin ich dabei den letzten Schritt meiner #Datenmigration abzuschließen: Nach der Übersiedlung meiner beruflichen #M365 Daten werden nun auch meine privaten Daten, die sich über die letzten 15 Jahre in Hashtag#iCloud angesammelt haben, auf meine in Europa gehostete #Nextcloud Instanz umziehen. Sie wird für mich auch langfristig ein zentraler und verlässlicher Speicherort sein. Selbstverständlich bleibt eines klar: Eine Cloud-Lösung ersetzt kein Backup.

@blackwolf@meow.social I just got my band set up on a #selfhosted #Matrix / #Element. This is controversial for a number of reasons - but I'm comfortable doing the grunt work to make it happen in a way I can live with. For my non-techie friends coming over, it's close enough and they picked it right up. Our needs are basic and are covered. I realise this will not fit everyone's needs, and it's a sprawling project choked with #enshittification at the moment, but if you can sift down through it all, you might find something that works. (Not very encouraging - I know. I'm sorry - it's a little dire out there.) Another alternative that I run is #xmpp. It's less like discord than most Matrix clients, but it's fast and light - time tested and has e2ee. There is also #NextCloud Talk. I don't use it much, but it works as well as xmpp or matrix in my experience.
