#RukiiNet was down for 9 hours 45 minutes today because we installed a new #ElectricCar charger, which cut the power momentarily which apparently killed my UPS. It took me a while to notice. #SelfHosting

The next #LightningTalk at #OggCamp was about Self-hosted Observability, using various #Grafana projects and #Prometheus etc. Alan was using some #YAML files to provision the services via docker etc. I didn't quite understand it all, but there's a few extra Grafana products I should check out - Alloy and Mimir. https://github.com/alanionita/observability-stack #selfhosting #metrics

It’s so satisfying when a new container finally spins up on the first try! 🐳 Every time I set something up in the home lab, I learn a new little trick or two. What’s one tech 'win' you’ve had this week? ✨ #SelfHosting #Linux #HomeLab

Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive are convenient services that millions use daily. But behind that convenience lies a cost that few acknowledge: your files are stored on servers owned by corporations that have full access to your data. They analyze your documents, your photos, your spreadsheets—for product improvement, targeted advertising, or simply because they can. If you store sensitive information—business correspondence, medical records, legal documents, financial statements—the risk is even greater. Google can freeze your account at any moment, and with it, access to everything stored there. This has already happened to thousands of users worldwide. Nextcloud is the answer. It is open-source software for building your own cloud server on your own hardware. Your files on your hardware, under your control, without any third parties. Nextcloud has evolved far beyond simple file storage: File sync across Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android with versioning and sharing Online document editing through Collabora or OnlyOffice Calendar and contacts via CalDAV/CardDAV Video conferencing and chat Photo backup with face and object recognition Email client, notes, kanban boards, forms, and hundreds more apps through the app store Hardware requirements are surprisingly modest. For 1-5 users, a Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM and an SSD works perfectly. An old laptop from 2015 or later is another excellent option. A VPS for a few dollars per month is ideal for those who prefer not to keep hardware at home. Installation via Docker Compose or Nextcloud AIO takes 15-30 minutes. Desktop and mobile clients provide automatic sync like Dropbox. Calendar and contacts sync without Google or Apple. Self-hosted means self-responsibility: strong passwords, two-factor authentication, SSL certificates, regular updates, backups, and firewall configuration. But the reward is priceless: certainty that your data is truly yours. Nextcloud in 2026 is mature, stable, and feature-rich. It does not fall short of Google Drive in functionality. In privacy and control, it surpasses it by orders of magnitude. Start with Nextcloud AIO on an inexpensive VPS. In one or two hours, you will have a fully functional cloud storage system open only to you. This is one of the most important steps toward digital independence. https://newsgroup.site/nextcloud-self-hosted-cloud-storage-guide-2026/ #Nextcloud #Privacy #SelfHosting #CloudStorage #OpenSource #DigitalSovereignty #GoogleDrive #Dropbox

Ok #homeautomation and #selfhosting folks, I am looking for opinions (boosts welcome). I have this swimming pool controller that I built off a raspberry pi. It sits outside in a waterproof enclosure year-round. Temperatures range from -10ºC to 50ºC over the course of a year. It's running Raspbian or some Debian-flavored Linux. I've tried spinning rust hard drives and SSDs. They die within 12-18 months and I'm on my third failure. I have a couple ideas. Netboot: I could have it boot via PXE or TFTP or something and have no permanent storage outside.SD flash cards. I could just run it off a micro-SD, and keep a few handy so when they burn out, I just swap it in. I can use NFS for permanent storage, so the loss of the SD doesn't matter. Some kind of storage that is more resilient to this kind of temperature and humidity swing? Thoughts on storage for this outdoor project? I'm asking other questions later in the thread.

The current waterproof box I use is a 300 x 300 x 180mm version of this. It works well, so I don't need a different one, but I'm open to suggestions. #homeautomation #selfhosting

Syncthing-Fork is an open-source Android app for syncing files directly between your devices --no cloud needed. Built on Syncthing, it uses peer-to-peer connections so your data stays private and fully under your control. A solid alternative to Google Drive or Dropbox if you care about decentralization and privacy. 👉 https://github.com/researchxxl/syncthing-android 👉 More privacy-friendly tools: https://digital-escape-tools-phi.vercel.app/ #OpenSource #Privacy #SelfHosting #Decentralization #Android #DigitalMinimalism

dobra zaczynam rozważać przeniesienie mojego domowego serwera na jakąś dedykowaną maszynę (obecnie stoi na starym macbooku z ubuntu). Polećcie co można by kupić w rozsądnych pieniądzach. Zaznaczam, że nadal jestem laikiem, więc nie do końca wiem na co zwracać uwagę. #selfhosting #samogoszczenie

Could an old mobile device (phone or tablet) be used as a home server, FreedomBox styles? Imagine it has a big internal storage and/or SDcard, and it's running a custom ROM (a Mobile GNU distro) intended for the purpose. Plus it's permanently plugged into power and connected to reliable WiFi. Is this something we could realistically repurpose old mobiles for if they don't support 4G calling? #SelfHosting #HomeServer #FreedomBox

Is anyone in the Fediverse self-hosting an RSS aggregator? Preferably that doesn't need docker? Looking for recommendations. I'm currently using the Vivaldi integrated one, but that doesn't sync between devices. #RSS #SelfHosting

Po odgoogleowaniu i odappleowaniu mojego telefonu czuję, że to dopiero początek drogi do cyfrowej wolności. Kolejny krok? Czas zacząć gospodarować we własnym cyfrowym ogródku. #selfhosting #homelab #degoogle #deapple #digitalsovereignty
