Kindle certainly doesn’t like to make it easy for authors using their services. I’m in the process of updating the eBook version of How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List to the second edition. As I’ve mentioned before, whilst preparing the Amazon print edition I encountered something weird when I was using cover creator. I was forced to create a new cover as the trim size had been changed to bring it line with the Draft2Digital version but try as I might I was unable to match the original cover design which was a bit disappointing. I’m now running into a similar problem with the eBook version as there doesn’t seem to be any facility to use the same cover for both versions. Cover creator is allowing me to produce something similar, but it won’t allow me to match the existing cover. For example, the author name comes up as TIM HAYES, all in capital letters, and it won’t let me reformat it to a mix of upper case and lower case so I can’t use Tim Hayes as on the cover of the print version. It’s hinky, inflexible, and downright frustrating to use. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel

I understand it’s considered wise to publish your eBook on a variety of platforms to take into account the reader’s prejudices regarding big tech. What’s the consensus on which platforms one should choose? #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel #IndieAuthorsSocial

How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List isn’t the first book I’ve self-published on Amazon. When I retired from being an aquarium writer writing around about nine years ago I published a non-fiction book under the name T M Hayes entitled AQUATICAL•LATIN which examined the etymology (the meaning) of the scientific names of around 950 species of the most common tropical marine fishes in the aquarium hobby. You can find this title at: https://linkly.link/2ZykB UK and https://linkly.link/2ZylE US. AQUATICAL•LATIN received a 5 star review on Amazon. I laughingly refer to it as the book which established a new category of non-fiction books, unpopular science. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel #IndieAuthorsSocial

#PennedPossibilities 974 — Does your MC become jealous? If so, to what degree? How does their jealousy manifest? Not exactly jealousy, but my deuteragonist, Vick a hereditary witch is extremely over-protective when it comes to her partner, Nathan the protagonist. She’s the Action Girl of the duo who has no qualms about immolating someone stupid enough to point an assault rifle at the love of her life. Nathan, on the other hand is the kind of lovable rogue who sole means of offence is a two-shot Taser and whose favourite form of defence against danger is to rapidly head in the opposite direction of any threat. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel

#PennedPossibilities 973 — How do you select the names of your characters? For you, is there a method? I use multiple methods to generate character names including ones based on mythology and popular culture. The head of a law enforcement agency known as the Hounds goes by the name of Drummond. An androgenous character is known as Orlando. I’m fortunate that my urban fantasy involves magic so it’s unwise to use one’s real name, resulting in a number of punny names such as Hounds called Ripley (believe it or not) and a duo named Thompson and Thomson. And, as a last resort, it’s always worth glancing at one’s bookshelves and creating a name which is a mash up of some of your favourite authors. #Bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel

A good writing session today, 1400 words, good compared to my output lately, anyway, which has been rather rubbish. #writing #indieAuthor #writingcommunity #writersOfMastodon

#WritersCoffeeClub 2.22 — Are there types of settings you avoid writing? Why? Settings no. Situations or themes, yes. I don't like glorifying non-con spicy things by writing abt them and I don't like writing stuffs like torture or SA. I knos they happen. And tbh some of the ppl I write have experienced those things, and some of the ppl that read that stuff too. And... yesh. Maybe the writer as well. "But what if it isnt avoidable?" Hn. Then it gets mentioned as a thing that happened. Not detailed while it does. #writing #writers #WritersOfMastodon

#WritersCoffeeClub 2.21 — Share an unexpected critique you’ve received. Why did it surprise you? This is a *really* good prompt, but I can't think of anything in particular to write in response. I will say that I've had so much help from friends here on Mastodon in our writing community. Every little bit helps. However, I can't think of anything super surprising or unexpected. Whenever I've received a bit of help with that kind of thing, whenever I've gotten some critiques, it's because I've asked for it. Edit: Something finally came to mind. Someone told me that I should change the way I write, but she didn't understand that the POV I use is actually a thing. She was very critical and confused. It actually almost had me changing the way I write. This happened years ago but it still kind of sticks with me, sometimes. I enjoy writing either of these: Third Person Omniscient POV: The narrator has full knowledge of all characters' thoughts, feelings, and the story's past and future, enabling a god-like perspective. While less common in modern novels, it is used in classic literature and genres requiring a broad narrative scope. Multiple POVs: Involves shifting between different characters' perspectives, often across chapters or scenes. This approach allows for a broader story scope and deeper character development but requires careful structuring to avoid “head-hopping” and maintain reader clarity. #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon

#ScribesAndMakers 2.21 — Talk To Me Day. Featured Creator @Firlefanz@writing.exchange From one author with "wolf shifters" to another, something along the same vein, I have two questions for new readers to see... • How does the full moon affect your wolf’s behavior, or do you give them control over their transformations? • What’s the most challenging part of living with a wolf identity in your world? I thought they might be interesting for others to read. #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon

I've been catching up publishing my #serialfiction episodes to #WorldAnvil. All of these were on Patreon early-access some time ago. But now four new ones are up, which starts with Episode 22 - "They Are Not Alone". I don't have new header graphics for any of these, as I'm just focusing on #writing and organising at the moment. Enjoy. #SerialStory #WritingCommunity #WritersOfMastodon https://www.worldanvil.com/w/qal-ath-fj-brodie/a/xxii-they-are-not-alone-prose

#WordWeavers 2/2: Do you enjoy writing good, bad, or morally grey characters more? Why? No one is absolutely good or absolutely bad, even if certain ‘world leaders’ currently come very close to the latter. And one-dimensional characters aren’t interesting to write about or to read. But ‘grey’? Why limit ourselves to monochrome? #books #writing #writersofmastodon
