Quick new #introduction post since I've migrated over to ecoevo.social I'm an ecologist at Penn State University with a research focus on #tree / #forest growth and #carbon dynamics. I also have a side interest in the application of geographic #theory to #nature #society relations. And I write some short #fiction in my spare time. #ecology #geography #ClimateChange

@CharlotteEowyn@chaosfem.tw A lot of the HFY ( Humanity, F**k Yeah!) Sci-Fi stuff on Reddit and YouTube very much fits into this category. Mostly consisting of pesky aliens getting outclassed by or receiving a good thumping from humanity. It rarely portrays humanity as being the unreasonable party. If you exclude this and the stories of lost alien princesses which fill the galaxy and continually need rescuing there are still some worthwhile stories but you have to hunt for them. #hfy #scifi #fiction

An gabh thusa, River, Phoenix mar do chèile pòsta — an geall thu do ghràdh, do dhìlseachd, agus d' onair, fhad 's a bhios anail annad? https://thistleandmoss.com/p/what-we-practice-for #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #author

You must be Sarah. Phoenix mentioned you. Said you're the philosopher of the group, she said. Phoenix is generous with titles, Sarah said with a smirk. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/what-we-practice-for #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #author

Leila claimed the end of a middle row, phone face-down for once — a concession so radical it constituted its own form of ceremony. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/what-we-practice-for #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #author

Isabella's deal is that she experiences everything at full volume and then gets furious when the world doesn't match the intensity of what she felt. She cried during that documentary about the coral reefs. Not a little. Ugly crying. Mascara on Kirsten's pillowcase level crying. I'd cry about coral reefs, I said, and it came out softer than I meant it to. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/some-things-just-never-change #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #autho

Rebecca Hall obituary My partner, Rebecca Hall, who has died aged 78, was a woman with many gifts and interests – perhaps too many, to the detriment of her talent as a writer. Rebecca was a prize-winning screenwriter, adapting Klaus Mann’s The Volcano for a film by the German director Ottokar Runze in 1999; a clever poet in her book Fruits of Paradise (1999), a collection of daily thoughts, poems and philosophies; a fearless campaigner, who documented cases of medical malpractice in Indefensible Treatment (1985); and a determined advocate for animals in Animals Are Equal (1980) and Voiceless Victims (1984). #Quotes #Reading #Fiction #Empathy #BarbaraKingsolver A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Good fiction creates empathy. A novel takes you somewhere and asks you to look through the eyes of another person, to live another life. -Barbara Kingsolver, novelist, essayist, and poet (b. 8 Apr 1955)

TW/CW, it involves some VERY real & hard topics. "And every single time she stabilizes, she walks out. Out of treatment. Out of follow-up. Out of medication management. She nods at the discharge plan and never fills the prescription. Three months later I get another call" https://thistleandmoss.com/p/the-appetite-of-an-aberration #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #author

TW/CW, it involves some VERY real, VERY hard topics. "Impossible Thinking again, I said, and my voice came out flatter than I intended. She thinks that just by imagining things, that makes them materialize. Yes. But more than that. Micky turned her ginger ale on the napkin, a slow rotation. The boundary between what she believes and what she fantasizes has become permeable." https://thistleandmoss.com/p/the-appetite-of-an-aberration #trans #queer #lgbtqia #fiction #reading #writing #author
