I bought two different books on writing poetry, with prompts to get you started. Unfortunately, one of the books while encouraging you to "write deeply" the author also at many times criticises all the ways you can fall into "trite" and/or "workshop standard" poetry and how absolutely awful it is - as a way to try to convince you why it needs to be deep. Almost setting up rules to follow and expectations for qualities, or you'll inevitably be an unworthy poet (my interpretation of the introduction.) What a way to discourage people from even trying. Write that trite poem and play around with it, go to that poetry or writing workshop, enjoy the community. Express yourself. And yeah unfortunately that book is going to go straight into the next donation pile. I'll see what the other one brings for ideas. #writing #poetry #opinions #currentlyReading

Some scenes from today, 1: I attended the letterpress sale and got some artisan papers for a nature center that can use them for programs. Several letterpress folks were there picking up heavy equipment. (Scott even designed his own fonts and poured molten lead into molds to create them.) #poetry #poets #RedDragonfly #RedDragonflyPress #letterpress #MNastodon #Minnesota #arts #LetterpressPublishing

If you’re into poetry and/or hand-operated letterpresses, you might want to get to the Anderson Center in Red Wing, Minnesota this Saturday. Letterpress equipment sale @ noon Reception & exhibition at 2pm Details: https://www.andersoncenter.org/calendarevents/rdp/ I’ll elaborate on my tangential connection in the replies in this thread. #poetry #poets #RedDragonfly #RedDragonflyPress #letterpress #MNastodon #Minnesota #arts #LetterpressPublishing

When a Poet Dies When a poet dies nothing happens. A lesser poet breakfasting on coffee and a cherry strudel picks up a newspaper, turns pages to pass time. After breakfast she will sit down to write. Thus begins the one-poem book "When a Poet Dies." This is a tribute to the poet William Stafford (Jan 1914--Aug 1993), but it’s also just a darn good story about poets and how they affect the world. #poetry #RedDragonflyPress #MNastodon

Lewis Carroll's nonsense poem 'Jabberwocky' may be based on the County Durham legend of the Sockburn Worm. This foul-smelling, poisonous dragon, who lived on an isolated peninsula in the River Tees, was beheaded by a local noble. Jabberwocky describes how "The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head, He went galumphing back." Carroll's father was the rector of the nearby village of Croft. In the village church is a carving said to have inspired the Cheshire Cat. #WyrdWednesday #folklore #literature #weird #mythology #gothic #history #poetry #poems #poets #churches

Poets, how do you organize material for publication? Other than random single poems in print, I published on Kindle 1 collection based on a theme. I’m going to pull it and reissue (different publisher) as part of a book I’m calling 3 “collections” (themes) in 1 volume (still writing it). Much of my work is on different subjects, emotions, thoughts. Do you publish collections without a unifying theme? I’m all about being organized but wonder what a collection of unrelated poems could be like. It will be a joy to write again without a thematic group in mind! #poetry #poets #poetrycommunity #writing #writingcommunity #writerscoffeeclub
