When MTV News shut down, it felt like decades of culture vanished overnight 🕳️ But over 470,000 pages were already preserved. That history didn’t disappear. It was archived. 📚 Read VANISHING CULTURE to see why it matters 📖 Download & read: https://archive.org/details/vanishing-culture-2026 🛒 Purchase in print: https://www.betterworldbooks.com/product/detail/vanishing-culture-a-report-on-our-fragile-cultural-record-9798995425014/new #VanishingCulture #DigitalMemory #InternetArchive #MTVNews #Bookstodon

Wow! Thank you all! I wasn't finding any of these & am excited I will able to send this as a gift. I greatly appreciate your help Mastodon & #bookstodon! I do have a follow up... My 2009 book, "Unscientific America"," coauthored with Chris Mooney, was translated to Chinese, but I have never seen that version. I assumed it would not be possible to locate. If anyone knows how to find a copy, I'd be excited to have one. But most importantly, thanks again to all! /2

I know this is common knowledge, particularly for blind users, but I’m obsessed with ElevenLabs. The human-sounding voices are incredible; they've made listening to ebooks an amazing experience. Now I barely need other apps for ebooks, #Audiobooks are still my main choice, but when an audiobook is not available, or if I don't like the narrator's voice, then I always use Eleven Reader as an option. It means now I can read more and more with even a bigger pleasure. #Accessibility #Blind #Books #Bookstodon #Technology #AI

Hello lovely people!❤️ If you'd like to get your mum a copy of Tiny Moments of Joy for Mother's Day we're getting onto the last days for ordering your copies to make sure they arrive on time (making allowances for current global shenanigans!): https://www.swashbucklerpress.com/tiny-moments-of-joy Or if you think your mum would gleefully read a piratical detective story set in a post Tudor fantasy world, there's also OverLondon. It's rather good. I promise😊: https://www.swashbucklerpress.com/overlondon Thank you for reading my bookish promotional tomfoolery! ❤️🪻😊 #books #bookstodon

Kindle certainly doesn’t like to make it easy for authors using their services. I’m in the process of updating the eBook version of How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List to the second edition. As I’ve mentioned before, whilst preparing the Amazon print edition I encountered something weird when I was using cover creator. I was forced to create a new cover as the trim size had been changed to bring it line with the Draft2Digital version but try as I might I was unable to match the original cover design which was a bit disappointing. I’m now running into a similar problem with the eBook version as there doesn’t seem to be any facility to use the same cover for both versions. Cover creator is allowing me to produce something similar, but it won’t allow me to match the existing cover. For example, the author name comes up as TIM HAYES, all in capital letters, and it won’t let me reformat it to a mix of upper case and lower case so I can’t use Tim Hayes as on the cover of the print version. It’s hinky, inflexible, and downright frustrating to use. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #Author #Novel

Happy Earth Day! 🌞 👀 🌎 🌍 🌏 This is the first Earth Day in several years that I haven't either been launching a book or celebrating in some way. (It's completely because *gestures to everything*) Next year, I'll celebrate extra! For now, here's a few hopeful climate reads to add to your pile... 🧵 #climatechange #bookstodon

Some *light* reading -- history and prophecy... I read #FrankWaters "#TheBookOfTheHopi" many years ago, but misplaced my old copy. Refreshing myself on #HopiProphecy and what it all means for the times we are living in. #EricCline's "#1177BC" has been a good read. I'm finding his chapter about a "perfect storm of calamities" to be relevant to the age we are living in now, especially with regard to #ClimateCrisis and #Polycrisis. Graeber/Wengrow's "#TheDawnOfEverything" has taken me a while to get through... So much to take in. Learning about power and systems of power and their origins. "The Occult Features of #Anarchism" by #EricaLagalisse also deals with systems of power -- and how #MutualAid is part of true autonomy (I agree). #Bookstodon #AmReading #ReadWithPride #BannedBooks #ToBeBanned? #ReadWhileItsStillLegal #BigBrother #Fascism #Authoritarianism #DavidGraeber #DavidWengrow

Non-Fiction Trilogy of sorts - "#TheLimitsToGrowth; #PowerLimitsAndProspectsForHumanSurvival; and #EarthForAllASurvivalGuideForHumanity. So, my copy of "The Limits To Growth" is a first edition from 1972, which I bought in a used book store in 1980. Whoever owned it before ("Denison") highlighted a bunch of stuff (the old school highlighters that don't fade), and put zig-zag lines around this paragraph: "In any finite system there must be constraints that can act to stop exponential growth. These constraints are negative feedback loops. The negative loops become stronger and stronger as growth approches the ultimate limit, or carrying capacity, of the system's environment. Finally, the negative loops balance or dominate the positive ones, and growth comes to an end. In the world system the negative feedback loops involve such processes as pollution of the environment, depletion of nonrenewable resources, and famine." Fast forward to 2021, where one of the Limits To Growth authors, #DennisMeadows, describes #RichardHeinberg's "Power - Limits And Prospects for Human Survival" as "a powerful new way of understanding the historic rise and probable fall of our species. It is an impressive, sweeping, and thought-provoking narrative." Heinberg talks about how we got to where we are today (lots of history), but also offers solutions (like #Agroecology and #Degrowth). Finally, "#EarthForAll - A Survival Guide For Humanity" -- which was a report to the #ClubOfRome, and a 50 year follow-up to Limits To Growth. This book is where I learned about the #GiantLeapScenario that we so need to survive as a species on a viable planet. Limits To Growth influenced my thinking at a young age. "Power" explains how we went wrong, and "Earth For All" gives me hope for the future. #Bookstodon #AmReading #History #DeGrowth #PowerStructures #ABetterWorldIsPossible #SolarPunkSunday #Earth4All #GiantLeap

Finished reading: Little Brother by Cory Doctorow 📚 Although I first discovered @pluralistic@mamot.fr through his more recent novels (and the Fediverse), I can understand why so many people consider this book, one of his best. I absolutely loved it —truly great storytelling. https://micro.blog/books/9791041985197 #Books #Bookstodon

Finally got round to getting Libby connected with my Kobo. There is only 1 (one) book available. Is this normal, or have I got an obscure filter active? #bookstodon
