Writing Rituals There is, reportedly, a clinically diagnosable condition known as hypergraphia. It is characterized by an intense urge to write or draw. People speculate that Brandon Sanderson, that prodigious producer of speculative fiction, has it; ditto Stephen King. Isaac Asimov, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Vincent Van Gogh, and Sylvia Plath have also been named as possible candidates for this irregularity, also known as graphomania. I mention this condition only to report, sadly, that I do not have it. My list of brilliant, sure-to-succeed ideas for books far exceeds the time I put into writing them. I have no excuse for my lack of output other than that, at times, I just don’t wanna write. https://writerunboxed.com/2026/04/23/87260/ #CRAFT #Writinglife #rituals #writingrituals

A job rejection and a query rejection on the same day yesterday. At least it was free ice cream day at Ben and Jerry's. All I want to do is write but... yeah hard to when it feels like its all for nothing. #writing #writinglife #amwriting #writingcommunity

I always find myself hating the usage of "that that" in a sentence. There are times when you have no choice, which I wound up doing. It'll change in the next draft just because I find it such a mouthful to say outloud. #writing #amwriting #writinglife #writingcommunity

My crazy little play got rejected from a contest. I'd been wondering when the rejection would come as it been a while since I'd submitted it. Really wanted it to happen though, even though there thousands of probably much better plays that were submitted to the contest. #writinglife #amwriting #writing

When a Writer Does More Than One Thing I used to balk at the thought of sharing my day job with readers at my author events. My inner monologue went like this: They’ll think it’s pedantic! They’ll think you’re an impostor! They’ll wonder why your books haven’t made you money! They’ll laugh at you because you’re not a full time author! And once again, my inner monologue was some mustache-twirling villain sent to me by my brain’s dreadful HR person who never hires the right consultant. Shh.  I fired that consultant a few weeks ago. Sent that mustache-twirling villain straight out of my mind and changed the locks. Here’s why… https://writerunboxed.com/2026/03/05/when-a-writer-does-more-than-one-thing/ #REALWORLD #Writinglife #dayjobs #JillianForsberg #writinglife

Newsletter is up on the blog: https://ehlupton.com/2026/03/02/march-2026-the-ides-of-march-approaches/ Mostly of interest this month for the upcoming events (two in the next two weeks somehow!) and book reviews, but I think the little sketch of the Buddha is very nice. #newsletter #writingLife

Embodied Writing: How to Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Story Where do our stories come from? Not just theoretically or archetypally, but for each of us as individuals? From where do our stories—our romances, mysteries, fantasies, dramas, tragedies, and comedies—actually arise? Even when prompted by outer inspiration, they still come from somewhere deep inside of us, from a deeply human connection. And where does this […] The post Embodied Writing: How to Get Out of Your Head and Into Your Story appeared first on Helping Writers Become Authors. https://www.helpingwritersbecomeauthors.com/embodied-writing-get-out-of-your-head/ #Podcast #WritingInspiration #WritingLife #writinginspiration #writinglife

Practicing Radical Gratitude Though today’s post is not an insightful rumination on fiction craft or the publishing business, and isn’t as polished as I might wish it to be, I hope you’ll stick with me. This is a post about gratitude. This is me saying a heartfelt thank you to anyone reading it, and to those I spent time with at the recent UnConference where I felt such a deep sense of community, and to whatever powers the universe. https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/24/practicing-radical-gratitude/ #REALWORLD #ThereseAnneFowler #writinglife

When Friday the 13th Meets Valentine’s Day This is the second month in a row where the post I anticipated writing has been preempted by events—this time, by the calendar. Given the conjunction of two of the year’s most emotionally charged days, how could I not write about fear and love? Let me tell you a story. One of the most significant writing workshops I ever took part in was titled “Finding the Story.” It was run by screenwriter Gill Dennis, most famous for his script for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. In the workshop, Gill provided three cues, and we were to write scenes from our own past that those prompts suggested. The prompts were, in order: Moment of Greatest Fear Moment of Greatest Shame I Love You … https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/13/when-friday-the-13th-meets-valentines-day/ #CRAFT #REALWORLD #Writinglife #character #characterarc
