TOMORROW at 9pm eastern (that's 1am Monday UTC) it's #MONSTERDON the weekly monster movie watch party! Come watch a B-grade stinker with a bunch of nerds! This week we're watching HERCULES IN NEW YORK (1970)! Arnold Schwarzenegger's acting debut, the movie features Zeus sending Hercules to modern New York. Hilarity, needless to say, ensues. It's pretty awful, they even dubbed over Schwarzenegger's voice. Should be a blast :D The flick's available free with ads over on Tubi: https://tubitv.com/movies/321122/hercules-in-new-york Or you can download from Archive.org over here: https://archive.org/details/hercules.in.new.york.1969.1080p.bluray.x264.yify See you on Sunday! :D #Movies #Cinema #Cinemastodon #Horror #Scifi #Fantasy

Worlds of IF (December 1969) I like this style, if only because of nostalgia for the 70s. Is there a name for this kind of abstract, super-saturated artwork? SKYCHILD’S FALL (2006) Acrylic on Gessobord - 22” x 22” Commissioned out of the blue by a Japanese firm for a calendar. I never learned how the company got my name or contact info. After providing a summary of what they wanted me to explore, they left me to it. The theme had to do with a meteor that streaked through the sky in Australia and inspired legends among the Aboriginal people. https://www.michaelwhelan.com/galleries/skychilds-fall/ #fantasy #illustration

In my novel, “Our Better Nature”, Mary and her compatriots use their weather-wrangling powers to take on the global industrial complex, to cure climate change. No one can stop them. Almost. Several have read the book and commented on it. According to them, it’s worth reading. (Links to full reviews below). They say: Not too witchy, but enough magic (I mean science) to make it fun. – M.F. It feels like an adult version of those fairy tales we were read when we were kids… I only wish it was true. – B.A. A strong and enjoyable start from a new voice in urban fantasy. – L.R. Read this book though and it makes you feel as if there is some hope, that maybe something could be done if enough people organise themselves and band together. – G.C. The author has given us a wonderful story peopled by a rich tapestry of characters. He has blended science and magic, explored successes and failures, and love and sorrow. Ultimately he has offered a glimmer of hope that global cooperation may be able to drive environmental change. – M.R. #book #ebook #bookshelf #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #bookstodon #fantasy #sciencefiction #wiccan https://www.amazon.com/Our-Better-Nature-James-Porter/dp/B0GJ6QD4QN/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0 Links to reviews M.F, B.A., and L.R. are all found on the Amazon page. Tired of a dire reality? Run away into the fantasy world of “Prince Ewald the Brave” (2021) which is surely unlike our own!

  • a petty and uncareful executive figure makes increasingly questionable decisions while gradually weeding out any Generals or other advisors who would dare disagree with him

  • the most powerful chamber of government next to the executive openly debates legislation to remove this executive from power

  • someone who is actually in a position to solve this problem, but is too nice to have already solved it in the simplest and most brutal of ways, ultimately does what he must

Escape into this completely unfamiliar realm via your preferred online book retailer:

https://books2read.com/prince-ewald-the-brave

Or get it from an indie place:

'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' is visually impressive but less than it could be as a narrative. I bumped it up nearly a full ★ for Oliver Reed's one scene performance though. Full ★★★★ #review on #letterboxd: https://boxd.it/4mLYIB #movies #fantasy

‘Snake-Eater’ by T. Kingfisher is a book of indeterminate genre; my local library calls it a #Fantasy, the author calls it #Horror but that was while highlighting plot parallels with earlier books (protagonist goes to home of older relative where they uncover secrets and encounter the supernatural). There’s even a sci-fi since the story apparently takes place at some point after 2050, not that it affects the plot. The story is mostly about the protagonist settling into her new home, finding a place within a quirky community, but there is a supernatural threat building in the background to give the shape of a climax. I will say that spending time in the mind of a socially awkward person worrying about how to handle each strange new situation isn’t the funnest but it does setup realizing that “normal” people wouldn’t be any better at handle the new situations once they get truly strange which is something of a payoff. #Reading #Books

A troubled wanderer is summoned to serve as the personal guard of a rival family. He follows the route of a heroic ancestor through storied places, the depths of loneliness and suspicion, and a growing question of what he must do. A bookish princess struggles with grief, responsibilities, and the same conspiracy which accidentally empowered her. Soon she must contend with a troubled wanderer. ‘Nine Goblins’ by T. Kingfisher is about nine goblins (and a teddy bear) and is a very character forward story. It’s clear the author wanted to play around with these goblins (and teddy bear) and the plot was a secondary concern. Which I kind of wish they hadn’t bothered; the plot doesn’t give the book structure, there is no beginning middle end, there’s just goofing around then it ends. I would have been happy with just more goofing around, say in a series of episodic shorts, nine shorts, one per… wait no, that doesn’t work. #Reading #Books #Fantasy

He faces the scrutiny of commanders and villagers alike, and struggles to maintain their support while mending a dysfunctional former dukedom.
