Desktop and mobile clients provide automatic sync like Dropbox. Calendar and contacts sync without Google or Apple. Self-hosted means self-responsibility: strong passwords, two-factor authentication, SSL certificates, regular updates, backups, and firewall configuration. But the reward is priceless: certainty that your data is truly yours. Nextcloud in 2026 is mature, stable, and feature-rich. It does not fall short of Google Drive in functionality. In privacy and control, it surpasses it by orders of magnitude. Start with Nextcloud AIO on an inexpensive VPS. In one or two hours, you will have a fully functional cloud storage system open only to you.
