It will give local leaders powers and funding to expand contactless “tap-and-go” travel across #buses, #trains and #trams, building on systems in cities such as #London and #Nottingham. The plan includes over 40 commitments, alongside measures to keep travel affordable, such as fare caps and fuel duty freezes. A new partnership with Google will provide real-time bus tracking via Google Maps, particularly benefiting rural areas. Other initiatives include a £6 million Peak District pilot to better link buses and trains, and expansion of a national parking platform to simplify payments. Looking forward to the heady scent of Ransoms accompanying springtime woodland walks at locations like this in East Durham, NE England. Better known as 'Wild Garlic', I was surprised to discover the plant goes by quite a few other names. One such name is cow's leek as seemingly cows love to eat them. I was reading that down in Devon, dairy farmers have occasionally had the milk of their herds rejected because of the garlic flavour imparted to it by the cows having grazed upon the plant. I'm sure, with appropriate promotion, there is a marketing opportunity somewhere for garlic-flavoured milk! #england #durham #spring #march2026 #ramsons #countryside #woodland #photography

More than £100 million has been confirmed for active #travel programmes across #England over three years, aimed at helping people walk, wheel and cycle. The funding includes £78 million for cycle training scheme Bikeability, £16.1 million for Living Streets’ walk to school outreach, and £8 million for Cycling UK’s Big Bike Revival supporting adults back into cycling. Modeshift will receive £3.1 million for school travel initiatives, alongside smaller allocations for National Parks and transport hubs. The government says the investment will improve public health, cut emissions and make streets safer, while giving people cheaper travel options. Not on any obvious 'through route' the historic 'Kepier Hospital' lies tucked away on the banks of the River Wear downstream from the city of Durham in NE England. It has its roots at nearby Gilesgate where an almshouse (now St Giles Church) was founded by Bishop Flambard in 1112 AD and dedicated to God and St Giles, the patron saint of beggars and the crippled. This building, which took over the almshouse at Gilesgate was re-founded around 1180 AD, by Bishop Hugh le Puiset. At the Reformation, Kepier and its lands were granted to Henry VIII's Secretary of State, Sir William Paget, although later to a succession of lay owners. Of the original building, the gatehouse remains intact, the mansion survives as ruins, and the farmhouse is in private use. The 'Kepier Hospital' is a Scheduled Monument with Grade I and Grade II* listed building status. #england #durham #historicengland #photography

One thing is certain, the Sunderland East End skyline is going to change dramatically when the Lambton, Londonderry and Lumley Towers are finally demolished. It was last year that the announcement was made by Gentoo that the three blocks of flats would be bulldozed with repair costs of more than £15m needed for each block. Hi-rise living is perhaps not everybody's preferred choice, but I bet those living on the higher floors enjoy some cracking views looking out across the riverside and watching the big vessels coming and going into the Port of Sunderland. #england #sunderland #hirise #landscape #photography

🌱 First Bus, in partnership with bus supplier Pelican Bus and Coach and woodland project organiser Carma, has participated in a significant tree-planting initiative. Staff from First Bus joined a planting day at Olden Farm near Thornbury, where 1,000 trees were planted as part of a project linked to the supply of electric buses. Pelican commits to planting 10 trees for every electric bus delivered. The West of #England Mayor, Helen Godwin, also attended, highlighting the region's commitment to environmental sustainability and investment in electric buses. This initiative supports Carma's work in developing woodland projects and assisting veterans. First Bus has already introduced 98 electric buses in the West of England, with plans for more, aiming for a fully electric fleet by 2035.
