It has been a little bit since I posted this PSA, but it needs to be said again. 1) Some ppl's neurodivergence make it impossible for them to alt text. 2) Gatekeeping fedi by refusing to include them is ableist. "But Dio how do we know they're ND?" You don't So treat everyone kindly. Assume good intent. And don't exclude anyone. If alt comes easy for u, offer yo help instead of being ableist. "But there are tools that they can use..." It is not your place to try to force them to fit in. #AltText #NeuroDivergent #Ableist

Mein Beharren auf #Alttext ist mehr als "nur" Solidarität mit blinden Menschen. Ich sehe den Willen, Alttexte zu schreiben, auch als minimalen Gradmesser für Solidarität im Allgemeinen. Ja, Alttexte schreiben kostet ein paar Sekunden Denk- und Schreibzeit. Solidarität in anderen Bereichen kostet aber viel mehr, bis hin zu Gefahr für Leib und Leben. Was glaubt ihr, wenn ihr z.B. in der U-Bahn bedroht werdet, würde jemand, der zu faul für Alttext ist, hier auch nur vom Handy aufblicken?

I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you're yelling at a person on Fedi for not using #AltText, stop. Please. Should you use alt-text? Yes! Should you boost posts without alt-text? No! Should you yell at companies and bots who don't use alt-text? Fuck yeah! Should you try your best to make Fedi a more accessible, and safe place for everyone—including those who have trouble writing alt-text? Of course. Should you mention @altbot@fuzzies.wtf or #Alt4Me *occasionally* so folx know they're both wonderful tools that can help make Fedi a more inclusive place? It would be impolite not to. But—and let me make this clear—don't be a dick to folx who forget alt-text, or who have trouble writing it for whatever reason; it's not very punk of you.
