My Mum & Dad are watching a programme about country life, featuring shire horses. I love shire horses. A fella down the road from us kept some in a field nearby when I was growing up. Sometimes he’d let us kids have a ride on their backs. They had such lovely calm and accepting temperaments. You felt safe and as glorious as a king up there. #shirehorses #horses

A horse's whinny is unlike any other sound in nature Horses use their larynx to make two sounds simultaneously, so they are effectively singing and whistling at the same time “Horses are the only mammal known to use the larynx to produce two frequencies simultaneously where one is a whistle and, in fact, they’re the only large mammal, besides humans, to produce whistles as part of the standard vocal repertoire,” says Fitch. #horses #sound #whinny https://www.newscientist.com/article/2516446-a-horses-whinny-is-unlike-any-other-sound-in-nature/

“The beloved horse can be traced back to a fox-size ancestor that roamed modern-day North America around 55 million years ago,” Ryley Graham writes. And because we’re in the Year of the Horse, it’s the perfect time to learn about some amazing equine discoveries over time.
