Over 70% complete, our ELT is glowing in the #sunset light of the Atacama Desert in #Chile, surrounded by massive cranes hard at work to get this telescope up and running. With the first light planned for the end of the decade, the ELT and its groundbreaking 39-metre main mirror will take on some of the biggest challenges in #astronomy and, ultimately, help us understand our place in the #Universe. ‘Staggering’ number of people believe unproven claims about vaccines, raw milk and more

The result “blows the lid off of this idea” that such beliefs are held by only a fringe population of individuals who are uninformed or ideologically driven, says David Bersoff, head of research at the Edelman Trust Institute. “This is not like a small problematic group.”

"Trump on Friday fired all 24 members of the National Science Board (NSB), the body that oversees the National Science Foundation (NSF). Many science advocates see it as the latest step by his administration to erode—some would say destroy—the independence of the 76-year-old research agency." Quite likely, the board will be replaced by loyalists. Even if not, the WH will decide which "science" gets funded and which orgs get the funding. https://www.science.org/content/article/trump-fires-nsf-s-oversight-board #Science #UsPol 1/n

Fascist republicans introduce extreme bill to ban lawsuits against Big Oil forever Citizens, we need to speak up about the pollution and destruction of our lands and waters. If climate change isn't real, then why protect big oil from climate change lawsuits? https://heated.world/p/republicans-introduce-extreme-bill #congress #news #usa #science #pollution #registertovote #climate

Potentially good news for arthritis sufferers. A study on mice found that the loss of cartilage points to a protein called 15-PGDH. The protein becomes more abundant as people age and disrupts healing. But old mice experienced knee cartilage growth with the introduction of a 15-PGDH inhibitor. Great news about an mRNA vaccine for pancreatic #cancer, in early trials. It looks like patients who responded are still alive 6 years later. That's a huge deal. Am super hopeful for MRNA cancer vacines for a host of our deadliest cancers. #Science 🔗 https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/pancreatic-cancer-mrna-vaccine-shows-lasting-results-in-an-early-trial/ar-AA21czSE

RFK Jr.’s rejection of germ theory debunked in Senate hearing

In a Congressional hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) directly confronted anti-vaccine Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on his rejection of germ theory—the unquestionable scientific idea that specific pathogenic microbes cause specific diseases. After Kennedy defended his fringe view, Senator Bill Cassidy fact-checked and debunked Kennedy’s denialist arguments in real time. The exchanges mark a rare instance in which Kennedy’s dismissal of germ theory has been raised in such a high-profile public setting, in this case, a hearing of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions. Kennedy, who has no background in science, medicine, or public health, is well known as an ardent anti-vaccine activist and peddler of conspiracy theories. But his startling rejection of a cornerstone theory in biomedical science has mostly been underreported. As Ars Technica reported last year, Kennedy wrote about his germ theory denialism explicitly in his 2021 book The Real Anthony Fauci. In it, Kennedy maligns germ theory as a tool of pharmaceutical companies, scientists, and doctors to promote the use of modern medicines. Instead of accepting germ theory, Kennedy promotes a concept akin to the discarded terrain theory, in which diseases stem not from germs, but from imbalances in the body’s inner “terrain.” Those imbalances are claimed to be caused by poor nutrition and exposure to environmental toxins and stressors. (In his book, Kennedy erroneously labels this as “miasma theory,” but that is a different theory that suggests diseases derive from breathing bad air, vapors, or mists from decaying or corrupting matter. The idea was supplanted by germ theory, while terrain theory was never widely accepted.) …

The features we typically associate with narcissism align closely with traditional male norms. But perhaps we’ve been missing a big part of the picture. Yes, men score higher on certain narcissism traits, but women are just as susceptible. @sciencefocus@flipboard.com explains: https://flip.it/Qn53oD #Science #Humans #Psychology #Brain #Health

This story is amazing. Giant octopuses of the Cretaceous were up to 19 meters (60 feet) long. They were the apex ocean predators of their day, eating up plesiosaurs and mosasaurs. And they were apparently quite intelligent. Sorry we missed you! https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aea6285 #science #nature #history
