Over 70% complete, our ELT is glowing in the #sunset light of the Atacama Desert in #Chile, surrounded by massive cranes hard at work to get this telescope up and running. With the first light planned for the end of the decade, the ELT and its groundbreaking 39-metre main mirror will take on some of the biggest challenges in #astronomy and, ultimately, help us understand our place in the #Universe. A new cosmic test has finally, with CMB and large-scale structure data, become realistic: using the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect to test dark matter vs. MOND. Guess who wins? https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/dark-matter-new-cosmic-test-mond-fails/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #cool

This isn't a scene from Star Wars. What you're looking at is the Tarantual Nebula, and those beams come from the lasers installed on the telescopes of our Very Large Telescope Interferometer in #Chile. They create artificial stars 90 km above the ground to correct atmospheric turbulence, allowing the VLTI to observe faint targets. But why are four telescopes observing the same target? Taxi, please! 🚖👋 ALMA consists of 66 antennas that work together like a single gigantic telescope in the Chilean Andes. They can be rearranged in different layouts to discern various levels of detail. This is where these yellow trucks come in. Each truck can carry a 100-tonne antenna and put it in place with a precision of a few millimetres! Read more: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2615a/ 📷 S. The "past hypothesis" problem questions why, if entropy always increases, the hot Big Bang began with such a low amount of it. That's another puzzle solved by cosmic inflation https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/cosmic-inflation-past-hypothesis/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #cool

Event Horizon Telescope @ehtelescope@mastodon.social

This feathered visitor recently stopped by the IRAM 30-m telescope to assist with EHT observations.

The bird had gotten lost in the fog and appeared at the control room door- more than 1,500 meters above its usual habitat.

After a brief "internship," it was safely released back into nature the next morning.

It takes just over three seconds to read a typical sentence. In that tiny flash of time, the Universe has changed in tiny but mighty ways. On cosmic timescales, that really adds up https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/universe-changed-time-finish-sentence/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #awkward

Most galaxies are spirals, with ellipticals and lenticulars making up the next most common types. But peculiar galaxies reveal the in-between steps, showing how modern galaxies are made https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/peculiar-galaxies-beauty-cosmic-violence/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #interesting

Our Universe was once ruled by radiation and matter, but those densities eventually dilute. Would spatial curvature appear? Even if so, dark energy now flattens the Universe once again https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/dark-energy-curve-universe-time/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #awkward

It's 2026. There still isn't a hole in the Universe, and the famous picture they always show when describing it doesn't have anything to do with the Universe at all https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/hole-in-universe/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics

In 2013, NASA's Spitzer observed PMR 1, finding a structure that resembles a human brain. Today, JWST actually resolves the Exposed Cranium Nebula, revealing what's inside https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/jwst-dying-star-exposed-cranium/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #weird

Light and gravitational waves redshift, sure, as they travel through the expanding Universe. But do those signals degrade and deteriorate, and if so, what do we lose? https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/signals-degrade-space/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astrophysics #interesting

Here on Earth, notions like "where" and "when" are easy to practically define and use. But in space, particularly at cosmic distances, Einstein gives us a whole lot more to think about https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/einstein-revolutionized-where-when/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #physics #astrophysics #interesting

Two's company ⭐️⭐️ Just like we humans are strongly influenced by the presence of companions over the course of our lives, so are stars, literally. The pair of points at the centre of this image, taken with our VLT, are an old stellar couple known as AFGL 4106. https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2608a/ 📷 ESO/G. Was Einstein a lone genius who succeeded because he bucked the establishment? Without the help he got from his contemporaries, he never would have discovered all he did https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/einstein-lone-genius/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #history #physics #astrophysics #spiffy
