Great news about an mRNA vaccine for pancreatic #cancer, in early trials. It looks like patients who responded are still alive 6 years later. That's a huge deal. La incidència de càncer des de la industrialització és 10 vegades superior a la d'èpoques precedents. A la Bretanya de l'edat mitjana per exemple, oscil·lava entre el 9 i el 14%. A dia d'avui, entre el 40 i el 50%... L'argument que se sol donar per fer-ho menys alarmant és que ara vivim més i això augmenta les possibilitats de patir-ne. Però per valorar fins a quin punt aquest argument suavitza la realitat cal tenir en compte que, a l'edat mitjana, l'esperança de vida era baixa perquè hi havia molta més mortalitat infantil que ara. Però la majoria de persones que arribaven als 20 anys, podien esperar viure'n uns 70. I també cal no passar per alt, que les investigacions mostren que, fins i tot ajustant el tema de la mortalitat, és a dir mirant la incidència de càncer en la franja d'edat entre 40 i 50 anys, segueix sent 3 vegades superior a la d'avui dia. I un cop vist que aquest argument fracassa en normalitzar l'índex de càncer actual, podem mirar els altres que són, ens diuen, l'alta exposició a contaminants, químics utilitzats en el cultiu, cria i elaboració d'aliments, productes de neteja i "cura" personal... Hi afegiria temes de sistema nerviós, emocions i alimentació no només amb molts tòxics sinó deficient en el què ens pot protegir de la malaltia. Vaja, que la forma de vida que hem adoptat, aquesta que invariablement és elogiada com l'única que ens pot aporta el benestar, ens està matant. Perquè parlem de càncer però, què creus que trobaríem si poguéssim valorar la incidència de malalties mentals al llarg dels segles? I d'autoimmunes? Per això, torno a dir, la salut és un assumpte social. I lo social és un assumpte de salut. Per això, tenir cura de la salut implica inevitablement implicar-se en desmuntar un sistema que ens emmalalteix i en construir una societat que cuidi la vida. https://doi.org/10.1002/cncr.33615 #cancer #lasalutespolitica #historia
