Over 70% complete, our ELT is glowing in the #sunset light of the Atacama Desert in #Chile, surrounded by massive cranes hard at work to get this telescope up and running. With the first light planned for the end of the decade, the ELT and its groundbreaking 39-metre main mirror will take on some of the biggest challenges in #astronomy and, ultimately, help us understand our place in the #Universe. I went out into the garden at 10:30pm in the dark to observe the meteorites. I gave myself time for my eyes to adjust. I wrapped up warm. Since I saw exactly zero bright flashes streaking through the heavens here's a picture if a cake i made recently #physics #astronomy #crushing #disappoint #cake #meteorites

This Earth Day, some dream of saving the Earth, while others dream of leaving it. Here's why using antimatter as fuel is our best bet for interstellar travel https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/antimatter-energy-interstellar-travel/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #physics #astronomy #cool

Messier 3. A globular cluster containing about 500,000 stars. It doesn’t have a cool “common name” and I find that sad. That means we get to name it, right? I propose Globby McGlobface. Submissions are open until May 8th. I’ll publish the best one in my very unscientific journal. 📷 Sony a7 IV, Z61 II, 2 hours. #Astrophotography #Space #Astronomy 🔭

Hubble vs. My Backyard's Scope! First of all, happy B'day Hubble Space Telescope! Still the OG space-based telescope that changed our perspective of the Universe. For the B'day, NASA/ESA released an image of a section of the Trifid Nebula (left). You can see a nodule from inside the nebula and a thin stellar jet formed by a young stellar object buried inside the cloud. That's about 0.75 light-years in length. On the right is my 1-hour photo from my backyard - and the jet appears there too! Unlike Hubble, my backyard rig only has a 20cm aperture and has a whole lot of atmosphere, as well as city lights, to deal with. So it is really neat to be able to get that level of detail in 1 hour of observing. See the original Hubble image here: https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Hubble_turns_36_with_a_dazzling_Trifid_Nebula_portrait #TrifidNebula #Astrophotography #Science #Hubble #Astronomy #Astrodon

This isn't a scene from Star Wars. What you're looking at is the Tarantual Nebula, and those beams come from the lasers installed on the telescopes of our Very Large Telescope Interferometer in #Chile. They create artificial stars 90 km above the ground to correct atmospheric turbulence, allowing the VLTI to observe faint targets. But why are four telescopes observing the same target? A hellish world: Planet TOI-561 b, slightly larger than Earth, orbits an ancient, sunlike star so closely that a "year" lasts just 11 hours and its surface is lava. Yet somehow it has a thick atmosphere, hinting at how old, battered planets might rejuvenate themselves. https://eos.org/articles/a-lava-world-unexpectedly-hosts-an-atmosphere #science #nature #astronomy

It might not have won my #GoldStar for our #constellation Sagitta (listen here for more https://starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/e/sagitta-cosmic-background/) but I'm always gonna celebrate a globular cluster!!! This is Messier 71, it's located 13,000 LY from Earth & 27 LY across. 📷 :https://esahubble.org/images/potw1018a/ #astronomy #AstroDon #astrophotography #space #science #stars #GlobularCluster #Sagitta #Constellations

A new image of Saturn's North Pole has gone viral. Too bad it's an AI fake. Here's what the real things look like, and how you can tell for yourself https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/viral-saturn-real-ai-slop/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #astronomy #Saturn

What causes earthquakes in the Eastern US — so far from any fault line? It's one of earth science's great mysteries, and Boston College's retired Prof. Alan Kafka has spent 42 years on the case. Join us at the Westport Observatory for this fascinating in-person lecture, also live on YouTube & Zoom. When thinking about the Hubble tension, many fault "one bad measurement," somewhere, as the ultimate culprit. Astronomers just showed this cannot be the case https://bigthink.com/starts-with-a-bang/bad-measurement-hubble-tension-explanation/?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #stem #science #space #astronomy #cosmology #cool

Taxi, please! 🚖👋 ALMA consists of 66 antennas that work together like a single gigantic telescope in the Chilean Andes. They can be rearranged in different layouts to discern various levels of detail. This is where these yellow trucks come in. Each truck can carry a 100-tonne antenna and put it in place with a precision of a few millimetres! Read more: https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2615a/ 📷 S. @thanetric@mastodonapp.uk But so to would Artemis 2. In the reference frame of the Solar system's barycentre, Ted and #Artemis2, whilst not co-moving, have similar paths now that they are both on Terra. We'd need to pick a reference frame closer to home, where Artemis 2 is now stationary and Ted continues to move. WGS-84 is the obvious choice, I think. I suspect Ted is already being measured in it. I *definitely* wouldn't pick one with a billionaire as the origin point. The billionaire hopping onto a private (or even public) jet would make it seem like Artemis 2 was moving once again. Aside from complicating what is already a non-inertial frame, this seems like cheating to keep raising Artemis 2's total. (-: Artemis 2 does get legitimate credit for a few thousand extra km, though, because the service module took its own path around the globe after separation from the crew module. @GetCarter@mastodonapp.uk #astronomy #physics #GNSS #GPS

This week, I had the opportunity to stay 2 nights at the Pic du Midi #Observatory, in the french Pyrénées. I captured some #timelapse from this site, which is still magical. I was astonished by the dynamism of this observatory: new domes, new #instruments, new projects and new buildings. #Research in #astronomy in the metropolitan #France is performing like a charm. I fully support its application to the @unesco@mastodon.social ! #Nightphotography #Photography #Landscape #Sunset #Astrophotography #Space #Sky #Night #video #PicDuMidi #Science
