Universal Blue/Bazzite/Silverblue/other immutable Linux friends: (why) should I be using Homebrew? I contribute to a handful of web projects that use npm, ruby, and probably other package managers. I’ve not really had a problem lately installing things the way those projects say to for Linux, but I keep hearing about people using Homebrew on Linux. When needed, I can also spin up a toolbx container and work in there. Am I missing something? #Linux #Homebrew #Bazzite #uBlue #Fedora #Silverblue

Finally I was able to upgrade my #FedoraSilverblue test VM to #Fedora44 . I had to wait for the cisco repository to be updated with the openh264 codec for 44. And then, with only 3 deployments, my /boot partition was to full to be able to finish the deployment of fedora 44, so I had to manually remove a deployment. #fedora #beta

Instance-instance fediverse "sangeunahna.com" untuk beberapa hari kemungkinan bakal sering restart. Efek dari pakai distro immutable/atomic Fedora CoreOS (FCOS), di awal-awal bakal sering restart karena setiap install sesuatu (yang non container) ya restart dulu biar image nya aktif. Tapi enaknya nanti kalo dah matang, bisa dicuekin dia aman auto-update nya andalin zincati. Bahkan ketika FCOS keluarin major release baru. Pengalaman sudah berapa kali auto-upgrade major release server-server kami aman sentosa. Insya Allah gak akan pusing kalau versi pas install dah EOL. #fedora #fcos #linux

My ThinkPad T14s shipped with an Intel XMM7560 LTE modem locked behind a Lenovo unlock blob. I replaced it with a ~100-line bash script that does the exact same handshake - and explains, in plain shell, what the "unlock" really is: a SHA-256 over a 4-byte constant. No magic, no blob. Full credit to Floris Stoica-Marcu for the script. https://blog.hofstede.it/replacing-lenovos-wwan-unlock-blob-with-a-100-line-bash-script/ #Linux #Fedora #ThinkPad #ModemManager #FOSS

Have been playing around with #Fedora on the spare machine, I think it's pretty cool. I remember the old days with RedHat Linux. I think 6.1 was my first. That said, I think I'm moving the spare machine to #Slackware. I've been itching to dive back into the OG distro that I learned Linux on. I remember buying a giant 50 pack of floppy disks (they were blue, orange, yellow, green, and red and I bet lots of people know exactly the bundle of floppies I'm talking about here) and went to the local library that had the ability to FTP. Eventually I got Cable Internet and downloading ISOs of Slackware became real. But in the late 90s, if I wanted to get all the sets for Slackware, it was a visit to the local library.

Easter test weekend, initial findings. 😎 :fedora: On Fedora 44 Beta GNOME Edition, the file manager crashes every time I try to access my NAS. There are also frequent freezes with apps that weren’t included by default and were installed later. :ubuntu: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS also comes with GNOME 50, and unlike Fedora, it already includes kernel 7.0, which is great—especially for the latest hardware. This beta also seems to run more smoothly and stably than Fedora’s beta. However, it’s impossible to install or get Flatpaks to work, even though I installed the feature myself. It was also absolutely impossible to install the Nextcloud client, neither as a Snap nor as a Flatpak. I couldn’t get AppImage to start, even after making it executable. Nevertheless, both distributions already make a great impression and leave me wanting more as soon as they become stable. Ubuntu, in particular, has positively surprised me after many years; major strides have been made, whereas with Fedora, hardly any major changes are noticeable—they’re more under the hood. 👍 #linux #unix #opensource #freesoftware #fedora #fedora44beta #ubuntu #ubuntu2604 #gnome #gnome50 #kernel #kernel7

This week's Linux and FOSS news: LINUX NEWS elementaryOS dev announces to comply with California law to avoid fines: https://mastodon.online/@danirabbit/116250765623660340 (I mean, losing a source of income is a valid concern on her part, but it doesn't justify that she risks the privacy of the users. Even though she says in a reply that asking for ID is different, I wouldn't be so sure at this point that she won't consider implementing that too, just to stay in business.) Fedora Project Leader Suggests Linux Distros Could Adopt Apple's Age Verification API: https://itsfoss.com/news/fedora-leader-suggests-age-verification-api/ (Adopting a big tech corp's API? What the hell did he smoke? It's even worse than the Systemd stuff. I already had some trust issues with Fedora, but now it becomes pretty obvious, that they shouldn't be trusted) Devuan rejects compliance: https://xcancel.com/jaromil/status/2034694340249821329 (Now this is great to see. I'm considering getting away from Systemd due to their attitude to comply, Devuan is the primary distro I consider, because it would let me keep the Debian base but get rid of Systemd at the same time.) Slackware also rejects compliance: https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/how-is-ab-1043-going-to-impact-slackware-4175762747/page15.html#post6626190 (3 Systemd-free distros not complying at this point, there are quite a few distros to go to.) And ZorinOS too: https://forum.zorin.com/t/statement-about-age-verification-laws/61052 (A really good summary of this whole age nonsense, a worthy read) Kicksecure/Whonix changes plan, "unlikely" to comply, after user backlash: https://www.kicksecure.com/wiki/Age-api#status Inside the Systemd Age Verification Debate: Developer Responds to Criticism: https://itsfoss.com/dylan-taylor-systemd-controversy/ (I think he isn't the one to blame here, but rather the Systemd project. If he didn't do it, someone else would do it. That's what we get from a corporate-backed project I guess. Harrassing him won't do anything, it's just naive, childish behavior.) A little tip to anyone use #bluetooth (not custom wireless) keyboard and using #LUKS disk encryption. If you cannot enter the LUKS passphrase at boot, it is because the Bluetooth module and connection are not activated yet. To fix this, create /etc/dracut.conf.d/bluetooth.conf file and put this line on that file: add_dracutmodules+=" bluetooth " Don't forget to regenate your #initramfs by: sudo dracut --regenerate-all --force Tested on #fedora 43

@Sherlock_Homeless@burningboard.net Beste Oma ❤️ Ich würde #Fedora #Silverblue empfehlen, das bekommt man als Anfänger nicht kaputt und es gibt über den App Store genug Auswahl.

Unfortunately, my experiment with CachyOS is over, even though I gave the system a fair chance this time. First of all, I really liked CachyOS. The speed is phenomenal, and everything would have been perfect except for one tiny detail that is essential for me: Localsend didn't work. And I couldn't figure out why. I was able to install the program easily, and my computer recognized all the devices around it. Except for the devices around my computer with CachyOS on it... and it was also not possible to send files from the computer to the recognized devices or mark them as favorites. Not even a firewall was activated or anything else in the network settings as usual. With all the other distributions I usually use—Fedora, Debian, OpenSUSE, Zorin OS, FreeBSD, even a “real” Arch—there are no problems at all. And since I'm constantly sending files and photos back and forth between my smartphone and computers and don't want to be constantly plugging and unplugging cables, CachyOS is not for my everyday use. I find that very unfortunate. But it's usually little things like this that make you less happy with a distribution or Linux in general than others might be. 😧 #linux #unix #opensource #freesoftware #cachyos #fedora #debian #zorinos #arch #archlinux #freebsd #localsend

@washbearleek@mastodon.social I use #fedora for years and really love it, but I don't want to recommend people to move from one distro to other just because it was my choice. Use any distro that suits you.

Stop running setenforce 0 and pretending SELinux doesn't exist. I wrote a practical guide to actually working with SELinux on Fedora and RHEL: Contexts, booleans, troubleshooting denials, container volume labels, and the commands you'll actually use. No policy theory rabbit holes. Just the stuff that gets you unstuck. https://blog.hofstede.it/selinux-a-practical-guide-for-fedora-and-rhel/ #SELinux #Fedora #RHEL #Linux #sysadmin #infosec #itsec

#linux #macOS #fedora
