Newly released letters reveal JD Salinger’s wariness over ‘second-rate reviewers’ Exclusive: Author asked to remove reference to his ‘Jewish-Irishness’ from book jacket of The Catcher in the Rye He was a reclusive author, who revealed little about himself or the inspiration for his 1951 masterpiece The Catcher in the Rye. Now letters that JD Salinger wrote to his editor have come to light for the first time, offering significant insights, literary and personal. A previously unpublished correspondence reveals the author’s intervention over how he and his novel would be presented and his unease about his writing being viewed through an ethnic or religious lens. It’s time to test! I spent the weekend drafting experiments with the @surf@flipboard.social and @Flipboard@flipboard.social combination. The objective is to test whether small changes lead to more saves, deeper engagement, and stronger authority, more than just traffic. I am looking for repeat, interested and habitual readers. After testing a few combinations, I had AI simplify one experiment in this image. #publishing #bloggingtips #flipboardusergroup #surffeeds

Update. The passage in the #Trump budget criticizing expensive #subscriptions and #APCs (previous post, this thread) triggered a debate in the House of Representatives. "US lawmakers intensify scrutiny of scientific-publishing practices." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-01251-y "From ‘paper mills’ that sell authorships on fake or low-quality research papers to the costs associated with open-access publishing, US lawmakers are paying increasing attention to widely debated issues in scientific publishing. In a rare show of unity, members of the US House of Representatives from both sides of the political aisle agreed at a hearing that these issues deserve more attention from government — but there was less unity on what the solutions should be." #OpenAccess #Publishing #ScholComm

Rebecca Hall obituary My partner, Rebecca Hall, who has died aged 78, was a woman with many gifts and interests – perhaps too many, to the detriment of her talent as a writer. Rebecca was a prize-winning screenwriter, adapting Klaus Mann’s The Volcano for a film by the German director Ottokar Runze in 1999; a clever poet in her book Fruits of Paradise (1999), a collection of daily thoughts, poems and philosophies; a fearless campaigner, who documented cases of medical malpractice in Indefensible Treatment (1985); and a determined advocate for animals in Animals Are Equal (1980) and Voiceless Victims (1984). Glenn Storhaug obituary My friend Glenn Storhaug, who has died aged 78, was a poet, publisher and environmental campaigner. In the late 1970s he set up his own Five Seasons Press. Having taught himself typesetting, Glenn developed an enthusiasm for the American poets Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Wendell Berry, whose work he wished to promulgate. With the paper supplier John Purcell he was also instrumental in the development and production of a good quality recycled paper. The Guardian view on 25 years of Malorie Blackman’s Noughts & Crosses: a love story that changed an industry | Editorial Publishing has failed to deliver on its promises after Black Lives Matter. True diversity requires a lasting shift A World Book Day question: which children’s author is name-checked in Stormzy’s song Superheroes (and appears in the video for Mel Made Me Do It ) and Tinie Tempah’s Written in the Stars? The answer, as a generation of readers will know, is former children’s laureate Malorie Blackman. Her groundbreaking novel, Noughts & Crosses, turns 25 this year. Set in a dystopian Britain (Albion), in which racial hierarchies are reversed, this story of star-crossed lovers was one of the… https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2026/mar/06/the-guardian-view-on-25-years-of-malorie-blackmans-noughts-crosses-a-love-story-that-changed-an-industry #Publishing #Teenbooks #Childrenandteenagers #Books #MalorieBlackman
