Is there any good way of moving a process into a systemd StartTransientScope together with its children? In niri we put spawned processes into scopes, so oomd and other stuff can work properly. Usually you do it by putting yourself into a scope, then exec-ing the target program. But that's a 7 ms toll on startup time, so in niri we spawn the program right away, and then put it into a scope. However, if the program forks fast enough, that child doesn't go into the scope.. #niri #linux #systemd

@codewizard@hear-me.social @linux4noobs@programming.dev @linux4noobs@lemmy.world #systemd is the standard and it integrates well woth modern applications. #SysVinit is the preceding standard inherited from old #Unix OSes. I recommend #BennoRice's Video as an introduction…

systemd(ont)

Because of the ubiquity, nay, monopoly of systemd I always assumed it was miles ahead of other init systems. Nope. I’ve been using a non-systemd environment for a while and must say I’m surprised by how little breaks, i.e., next to nothing. Moreover, boot and shutdown times are faster. I’d suggest trying it out. https://nosystemd.org/

Age verification clearly doesn't belong into #systemd. We should have never merged this. Instead this should be incrementally added to the kernel itself. I'm doing my part: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20260401-i-hope-someone-believes-this-is-real-04f24e03944e@brauner

@PeterSoukup@mastodon.social @artixlinux@fosstodon.org Because this law is not so apparently abusive as the previous laws, many projects are willing to accept it, because "it's not a big deal" but this just the first cut of the thousands of cuts to come, in order to kill #privacy If I say, would you rather have me punch you in the face or spit on you shoes? the last one doesn't seem so bad compared to the first, but i would say they're equally bad, the government only shows you option A and B, they don't show you options C, D and E. privacy has always been under attack, this is just a slightly different tactic, the excuse is the same (save the children), it's a subtle tactic. speaking of #systemd https://mementomori.social/@levi/116291559554853388

@mgorny@social.treehouse.systems Actually, even that's not deep enough. There are a couple of FediVerse people who have been talking to legislators about the forthcoming #ColoradoLaw to try to get it to not lump #Unix & clones in with the smart 'phone app stores that legislators (as can be seen from the Bill summaries and the California legislative record) thought that they were targetting. The larger context is that this is version 2.0 legislation, currently pending in 4 states of the U.S.A., after the version 1.0 legislation in Utah, Texas, & Louisiana was blocked by the federal court for the Western District of Texas in January 2026 for being unconstitutional. Louisiana's Bill makes it explicit that it is repealing and replacing the prior Act. So a version that doesn't lump Unix & clones in with the Microsoft/Google/Apple App Stores that 'App Store Accountability' nominally targets might be version 3.0. https://mastodonapp.uk/@JdeBP/116268403720368221 https://www.mofo.com/resources/insights/251111-texas-targets-app-stores-with-new-accountability-law @carlrichell@fosstodon.org #AgeVerification #systemd #USLaw

I have a python script running as a system service. When it crashes, as it sometimes does, it does not seem to restart. I have Restart=always and RestartSec=10 in the unit file. What else should I be doing? #python #systemd #linux

Podman 5.8 :podman: just dropped and it’s quietly setting the stage for 6.0.

The highlights:

  • Quadlet multi-file install (bundle your whole stack in one file, finally)
  • Automatic BoltDB -> SQLite migration
  • AppArmor support in Quadlet unit files
  • podman exec –no-session for faster exec calls

If you’re running Quadlet-based deployments, this one’s worth your attention.

@sv1sjp@lemmy.world one thing missed on that article is #quadlet as #podman integration with #systemd.

I really like Veeam''s Backup solution especially on Linux because of the image based backups even with ext4. What I don't like ist the limited scheduling options. For that purpose I used some bash scripting and some SystemD units to help me out. I wrote a blog post about my process and at the end you can find a link to my git for the files. https://cperrin.xyz/en/2026/01/28/triggering-veeam-backups-on-linux-with-systemd/ #linux #backup #homelab #systemd #veeam #sysadmin

Up until a few years ago, I was just like you - I hated #systemd because it wasn't SysV. This all changed over ONE day, when I decided fighting against systemd by attempting to ignore it and do everything the way I knew how was not working. I read the effing manual. I quickly learned how it's supposed to be used. I started writing and modifying units. I created my own targets for groups of services. I fell in love. I'm not saying systemd will be right for you, but I am saying I was wrong about it.
