What are the real environmental impacts of data centers? A new paper claims that their heat exhaust leads to land surface temperatures increasing by an average of 2°C (3.6°F) and as much as 9°C (16°F). Andy Masley, a physics teacher turned writer and science communicator, explains the flaws in the research — off-the-wall methodology and misleading framing — that will likely lead to gross misinterpretations and misrepresentations in the media.

Can #HongKong win the #AI race? I think it has all of the right ingredients with the main headwind potentially being high #finance costs for #realestate which of course means higher operating costs for #datacenters that run it. However, the availability of enough commercial real estate, attractive tax regime, and vast amounts of power for reasonable prices help, especially compared to #business in #Singapore

Very interesting ‘thought exercise’ about Space GPUs
“Even if orbital data centers don’t make sense yet, in the long run the singularity is clearly moving into space.
Earth intercepts about one two-billionth of the sun’s total output. If #AI scaling continues, compute will eventually move to where the energy is.
So space #GPU’s are fun to think about, because they give you a sneak peek at the future.
Whether that future arrives in 2030, 2040, or 2050 is another question.

Many institutions are committed to #sustainability.
For this reason alone, #digitalsovereignty should be important to them.
Two years ago, scientists from @JLBe@mastodon.social and its network published a study on the sustainable use of #smartphones.

It showed that typical #socialmedia apps such as #Instagram, #TikTok, #YouTube, etc. on #cellphones conflict with a number of sustainability goals.
Among other things, they cause high #energy consumption, which is not incurred directly on the smartphone, but in #datacenters and transmission networks. A large proportion of the #electricity consumption is due to the fact that these apps do not respect #privacy and data protection, but instead spy on users.
The use of #Mastodon and other #Fediverse services is more sustainable because much less data is exchanged between users' smartphones and the service instances.
