Crazy how low #electricity prices are on the EU market today (deeply in the negative): this just shows how #renewables can drive down prices. If we keep a bit of nuclear and get the hang of energy storage and transmission, we can have cheap, carbon-free electricity continent-wide. #EUpol

#Electricity (and #Energy in general) is WAY TOO CHEAP in the #USA… like unless they pay >$10/gal / >$3/l & >50¢/kWh it's still too cheap!

DIY or just smarter than I fedi, I need help on two things. (UK based if makes a difference) 1) Need to replace the old night latch, its a cheap feeling case thing, I swapped the lock easily but hate the case. Unfortunately living in a block of flats I can't drill any more holes in my door. Am I correct in thinking the mounting plates for night latches are more or less standardised? If I buy a new latch I can use the old door mount/replace it without needing new holes 2) my flat has what I'm told are "lamp sockets". To me they look like BS 546 from a theatre but smaller (so sub 15A). As far as I am aware these are really old standards, but my building is about 2006, my question is: are these OK to use? Can my IKEA G plug lamps and such use this if I can find some adapter or some easy way to tell? Or am I stuck with annoying two switch light switches that only have one usable switch and useless sockets? #DIY #askfedi #fedihelp #electricity #lockstodon

In spite of renewables generating nearly half of world electricity needs, there is still pressure to build out new fossil fuel infrastructure because of... Data centers! #ClimateChange #Electricity https://www.theregister.com/2026/04/01/renewables_generated_nearly_half_global_power/

In the United Kingdom, greenhouse gas emissions fell 3% in 2024 compared to the year prior as the country got more power from renewables, imported more electricity, and closed its last coal power plant #uk #Britain #climate #ClimateChange #renewables #environment #earth #electricity https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-change/news/pollution-government-b2914556.html

Very interesting ‘thought exercise’ about Space GPUs “Even if orbital data centers don’t make sense yet, in the long run the singularity is clearly moving into space. Earth intercepts about one two-billionth of the sun’s total output. If #AI scaling continues, compute will eventually move to where the energy is. So space #GPU’s are fun to think about, because they give you a sneak peek at the future. Whether that future arrives in 2030, 2040, or 2050 is another question. https://www.dwarkesh.com/p/notes-on-space-gpus #musk #spaceX #electricity #datacenters

#GiftArticle Soaring #electricity prices are triggering a wave of power shutoffs nationwide, leaving more Americans in the dark as unpaid #bills pile up. Although there is no national count of electricity shutoffs, data from select utilities in 11 states show that disconnections have risen in at least 8 of them since last year, acc/to figures compiled by WaPo & the National #Energy Assistance Directors Association (#NEADA). #economy #affordability #Trump #inflation https://wapo.st/3Xb0mXI

"Brits to help foot power bill for datacenters under government AI plans" https://www.theregister.com/2025/11/18/uk_ai_growth_zones/?td=keepreading "The scheme will impose no additional cost on other electricity billpayers, the document claims, however, if discounts were to be covered by the government, that would still equate to ordinary people subsidizing energy bills for datacenters via their taxes." #AI #technology #uk #ukpol #politics #energy #electricity
