It's a very short boat ride the one from Singapore to Batam, Indonesia. But it's really a springboard from the globalised, motorised, and carbonised part of the world to the Global South. I have already travelled about 14,000km to come here without taking airplanes and I truly savour the crossing of this physical but most importantly cultural boundary between North and South. The taxi that takes me to the embarkment to Jakarta travels through bumpy roads, which turn into dirt road at the very access to the Pelni (the Indonesian national ferry company) departure point. I am torn between accepting the offer of porters to carry my luggage or carrying it myself. It's little money for me and a lot of money for them. I opt for carrying it myself, as I am short of Indonesian cash and I perceive porters' requests as bordering extortion. I travel 3rd class, because I want to stay as close as possible to the travelling conditions of most travellers. I get a bed in one of the many sleeping halls provided on the ship. A mattress is provided, although it's better not to think of the last time it has been washed. I must say sleeping is hard. People talk loudly throughout the night and kids cry loud. However, I am so tired that I sleep tight. @pheonix@hachyderm.io I mean, I know #RelianceDigital as Indian equivalent to #Komodo [which distributed the #SteamDeck in #Japan, #SouthKorea, #Taiwan, #Hongkong & #Singapore]… AFAIK Reliance also do distributions in Sri Lanka and the Maldives, cuz I've heard that from fellow divers that needed like spare parts or something…

Can #HongKong win the #AI race? I think it has all of the right ingredients with the main headwind potentially being high #finance costs for #realestate which of course means higher operating costs for #datacenters that run it. In #Singapore, the Land #Transport Authority (LTA) will open Circle Line Stage 6 (CCL6), the Downtown Line 3 extension and Thomson-East Coast Line Stage 5 this year. CCL6, linking HarbourFront and Marina Bay, is due to open mid-year, with three more stations on TEL5 and DTL3e in the second half. The additions support the Land Transport Master Plan 2040 goal of eight in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a station by the 2030s. On the Jurong Region Line, a new Tengah station, JS2A, will open in the mid-2030s, bringing the total to 25. Stage 1 will be delayed by six months to mid-2028 due to complex works, despite efforts to recover pandemic setbacks. Interim shuttle buses will start in late 2027. The Cross Island Line Phase 1 is on track for 2030, with Phase 2 and the Punggol Extension due in 2032. Phase 3 works begin next year. The Land #Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded two civil contracts worth around $735 million for the Downtown Line 2 extension (DTL2e) in #Singapore. Woh Hup Engineering Pte Ltd will build the DE1 underground station along Sungei Kadut Avenue, including a vehicular bridge and pedestrian link over Pang Sua Canal, at $285 million. A joint venture of Samwoh Corporation and China Communications Construction Company (Singapore Branch) will deliver the NS6/DE2 interchange station connecting the DTL and North-South Line for $450 million. Construction will use Earth Retaining and Stabilising Structures due to complex ground conditions near the NSL. Works start Q2 2026, with DTL2e operations targeted for 2035, improving access to Yew Tee, Sungei Kadut Eco-District and the Rail Corridor.
