@gedeonm@mastodon.social It was unfortunately what would be termed today as "AI slop". If I remember correctly, most of #Data's attempts at art turned out to be some form of regurgitation, sometimes exceedingly boring. He even noticed it in #Inheritance in his mom's playing of the violin, as evidence she was artificial. The most damning version is #InTheory when he basically turns into a LLM chatbot to try to have a girlfriend. #AllStarTrek #StarTrek

Watching ministers talk about NHS data strategy is like watching someone confidently rewire a house with no understanding of electricity. The language sounds polished, the reassurances are endless, but the substance just isn’t there. Choosing a company like Palantir isn’t a neutral technical decision. It’s a long-term structural commitment with real implications for control, access, and public trust. Yet it’s presented as a simple procurement exercise. And when political careers move on, as they always do, there’s rarely any reckoning for decisions that reshape public infrastructure for decades. That asymmetry should concern everyone. #technology #surveillance #nhs #politics #ice #ethics #society #data Palantir: NHS pilot’s “success” is questioned as second figure at major trust is linked to the tech giant | The BMJ https://www.bmj.com/content/393/bmj.s680

Dangerous apps - In the web of data brokers What many smartphone users know: the apps on their phones collect detailed location data. What few people know: the information often ends up with a global network of data brokers and advertising companies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y07j3hXAI-g #privacy #tracking #data

My technical know-how falls short by a long way and I'm having a little trouble figuring out whether I get what I want from the Fediverse. By my limited understanding AT Protocol allows for a 'nomadic' id/datastore (PDS) but with ActivityPub, the nearest we get to that is by having your own instance of an app of your choice and plugging it in/out of other peoples, but your data can only really live in *your instance of *that app?? #Fediverse #atproto #ActivityPub #Data #Identity #PotteringAbout

Thank god! Signs that the lights are coming on re Palantir and the NHS. ‘a growing recognition that the issue of Palantir and potential reputation risk had moved beyond the Labour left and Greens, who have led criticism in the past’ ‘When you look at some of the things Palantir’s leaders have said in the States, when you look at their political views and their outlook … If you were to put [Thiel] and some of those Palantir bosses on the political spectrum in the UK, they would be well off to the right of even Kemi Badenoch’s Conservative party’ Let’s get them out of our data https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/mar/31/palantir-uk-boss-louis-mosley-ministers-nhs-contract #nhs #palantir #peterthiel #wesstreeting #nationalhealthservice #health #uk #guardian #ukpolitics #data #ai

Just did a quick history and writeup of the history of #Switzerland's co-operation with the US, including the recent incidents with #Protonmail, compromising the #data of #activists who thought they were paying for privacy and #cybersecurity. Everyone says the Swiss have a great privacy protection, but I've always disagreed, it is a paper tiger of privacy that rubber stamps US requests. https://areebyasir.com/protonmails-history-of-swiss-and-us-government-compliance/

In a survey of 25 countries, the United States was the only county in which more adults describe the morality of their compatriots as bad than good. 53% of respondents said that the morality and ethics of other people in their country is either somewhat or very bad. Since this is a new question for Pew Research, the team says they don't know whether this is a long-held view or something new. A million miles away in sentiment, but just kilometres away geographically, 92% of Canadians think other Canadians are either very good or somewhat good. https://flip.it/bFGW8O #USNews #CanadianNews #Morality #Data

Have you ever worked anywhere that actually encrypted sensitive information at a column/field/table level? Or did your credit card/loan/insurance/etc processing service tick the “encryption at rest” checkbox and move on? #data
