KYC requirements mostly just create friction for regular people while criminals have the resources and know-how to bypass them. All they do is build a false sense of security and hand your personal data to companies that will inevitably leak it. #privacy #cybersecurity #identity

My technical know-how falls short by a long way and I'm having a little trouble figuring out whether I get what I want from the Fediverse. By my limited understanding AT Protocol allows for a 'nomadic' id/datastore (PDS) but with ActivityPub, the nearest we get to that is by having your own instance of an app of your choice and plugging it in/out of other peoples, but your data can only really live in *your instance of *that app?? #Fediverse #atproto #ActivityPub #Data #Identity #PotteringAbout

Thanks to the FEC and OpenSecrets we’re able to find who’s lobbying and funding the age verification laws.

Interestingly enough it turns out the same entities are the largest funders of the UK Online Safety Act, California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code, Digital Age Assurance Act and New York’s SAFE for Kids Act. so here it is:

I am tired of #safety and #security being treated as essential barriers of entry, to get things done on an #everyday level. Please stick to #passwordless #logins and #MagicLinks if you must use something, and let the account holder, not the holder of accounts, verify by a manner of each of our choosing, how to prove we are who we say we are. This is far more secure and less prone to #identity #impersonation as a result.

Who Are You? Part Two Do you remember the scene in that classic film What about Bob? in which Bob arranges to have himself tied to the mast of a sailboat? He wants to be included in his friends’ activities despite his fears, and as the boat goes forward he yells with pride, “I’m sailing! I’m a sailor! I sail!” We chuckle, but what exactly makes this scene so funny? I think it’s the absurd juxtaposition of an identity claim with evidence that it’s not true. I love this scene because those statements represent three overlapping but not identical realities. To get grammar-nerdy about it: The present participle “I’m sailing” implies that this occurrence is happening right now, but might not happen regularly. I’m not swimming or walking.
