This is simultaneously something I've seen many many times (in gardens) and never in my life (in the wild). It appears to be a perfectly normal Broad Bean, except it's not in an allotment or anywhere near one - it was by the pitch at Henley rugby ground. Food shocker for today! Strawberries aren’t true berries. Bananas are! A true berry develops from one flower with one ovary and usually has seeds inside. • Bananas grow from a single flower with one ovary. • Strawberries don’t, each seed is on the outside and is its own tiny fruit. #botany #SurfFeeds #foodstories #fruit #FoodTrivia #foodculture

Purple hyacinth orchid (Dipodium punctatum) at Mystery Bay, NSW. Only one plant out and only just starting to flower in late February near the ocean. I usually see this species flowering nearby from late November - this is probably the latest flowering I have seen (although it can apparently flower into March at some locations). #Orchids #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Ecology #Botany #Photography #Spring #InTheField #Nature #BloomScrolling #Dipodium

@acb@mastodon.social At this point, I recommend a short story by #RoaldDahl titled "The Sound Machine". It's collected in More Tales Of The Unexpected, amongst other places. Sun orchid (Thelymitra) variations growing close together on the edge of Croajingolong National Park, VIC. Thelymitra ixioides (spotted sun orchid) are common nearby but in open grassland some smaller-flowering forms are maybe closer to the very similar Thelymitra juncifolia (rush-leaf sun orchid). #Orchids #OzPlants #Biodiversity #Ecology #Botany #Photography #Spring #InTheField #Nature #BloomScrolling #EastGippsland #SunOrchids #Thelymitra
