This weekend I took a trip up to the top of Baker Lake, in the Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest in Washington, fed by snow and glacier melt of one of our 4 active volcanoes, Kulshan or Mt Baker (just look at the color of that water!) It's a fantastic time to hike along the river and lakeshore, the trees haven't fully leafed out and there's a lot of life happening on the forest floor. Plant-heavy thread ahead. 1/9 #PNW #nativeplants #hiking #getoutside #mountains

Sunday, April 12th. The bloodroot plant is a lovely sign of spring. The plants make happy colonies, spreading by rhizomes and seed dispersal. The pollinators appreciate the early blossoms. And later in the season the ants like to carry the seeds off as treasure. #nativeplants, #pollinators, #minnesota, #zone4b

A weekend of almosts in #NorthernIllinois. Hit 80F and the bees are out but the plants aren't ready for them yet. Pictured: marsh marigold (Caltha palustris) and tulips. #gardening #NativePlants

@chris@westmichigan.social Michigan State has plant lists split by geography. https://www.canr.msu.edu/nativeplants/plant_facts/local_info/index You may have a local Wild Ones, botanic garden, or master gardener org as well. Their websites should be helpful. I find #NativePlants very rewarding and relatively easier to grow once I got out of the "cultivated" mindset. I hope you'll enjoy too!

I now know the plantain-leaved sedges (Carex plantaginea) will provide the first flowers of the #garden. Eventually, the rabbits move on to other meals but these sedges are very popular right now. #NativePlants #gardening #NorthernIllinois #BloomScrolling

March 18, 2026. Field notes. The wind and heavy snow of the weekend covers native plants. This round headed bush clover stem is sturdy, often lasting two winters. This stem will return to the upright position as the snow melts. These plants have lovely winter color and striking seed heads. The seeds are attractive, they are small legumes. #minnesota, #nativeplants, #pollinators, #megafauna, #Zone4b

Margaret Roach is one of my gardening heroes. She has lovely online workshop *tomorrow* (Thursday) about #NativePlants, cultivars and nativars, well worth a look: Nature’s super-power is diversity — you can see it in action even within a “wild-type” population of Hepatica americana (above), showing off some of the depth of the genetic range within its tiny blooms. Look at that breadth of color! So what happens when we humans tinker with the genetics, nudging all the flowers to be one shade, maybe ... or larger, or later-blooming? And how are the pollinators and other beneficial insects who rely on those plants impacted by our creation of cultivars and selections? These are important questions for gardeners who desire both beauty and positive ecological impact. I've invited Joseph Tychonievich to help us answer them. Come discover the hidden differences between straight species, wild-types, cultivars, nativars, selections, and ecotypes. Last Chance: "The cultivar conundrum" will be taught live on Zoom tomorrow (Thursday, January 29th) from 1-2:30 pm Eastern. https://margaretroach.podia.com/winter-class-series #gardening

@joewynne@mindly.social Thank you for adding diversity to the habitat for the pollinators. The stiff goldenrod is an attractive plant through the seasons. We also have stiff goldenrod seeds doing the cold stratification in the refrigerator. #nativeplants, #minnesota, #Zone4b

In a world that astonishes every day, today I am astonished to learn that an #ICE guy told the neighbors he was a botanist. #botany #NativePlants
