Spent this morning getting the plants into their containers and setting up the new hummingbird feeder. To say I am excited would be an understatement. Trying to keep myself under control with the plants this season. Planted two pickling cucumbers, one Cherokee purple and one Carolina gold heirloom tomato plant plus grape tomatoes and only three pepper plants. Last year we were buried in peppers! My neighbor is helping me bring up the lemon tree from the basement later today, woot! 🍅🌶️🍋🌿#Garden

The allotment in the sunshine. It is looking greener and greener now but there is still no rain. Just more sunshine every day. I am glad now that we had a wet winter and there is still enough moisture in the ground for anything more deeper rooted. But I do have to water my newly planted trees and perennials to help them get established before summer arrives. #allotment #garden

Finally bought a few plants today ahead of the weekend at the farmer’s market when it wasn’t crazy nuts with people. Got some tomatoes, three kinds of peppers, flowers and even stuff to set up a new hummingbird feeder. I’m excited! #Garden

This Self-Sufficient Orchard Idea Makes Growing Fruit Surprisingly Easy – Even in a Small Yard https://www.homesandgardens.com/gardens/self-sufficient-orchard-ideas?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=Econopass%2Fmagazine%2FFLIPBOARD+EXCHANGE+FEED+%F0%9F%97%9E%EF%B8%8F A self-sufficient orchard might sound like something reserved for rolling acres and rural idylls, but the reality is far more encouraging. The blooms are almost finished on the azaleas (left, two quite mature Azalea x 'Girard's Rose'; right, a young Azalea x 'Girard's Fuchsia') in the front garden, which sandwich a Rhododendron x azalea that bloomed a few weeks earlier. I had not intended to get a different colour when I purchased the young azalea a few years ago to place to the right of the larger rhododendron azalea, but as the plants on the left were already in the front garden when I moved here 20 years ago, I guessed that the colour was 'fuchsia' when in fact it is 'rose'. My hope is that, if I am able to live here another 20 years, that the 'fuchsia' azalea fills out just as the 'rose' azaleas have, and the two-tone colour scheme will become a neighbourhood favourite. #garden #gardening #azalea #AzaleaGirardsFuschia #AzaleaGirardsRose

Bought bags and bags of potting soil, cleaned all the furniture in the deck, hooked up the hose and brought the little key lime tree up from the basement for the summer. It already has tons of buds on it! The lemon tree is going to have to wait until I can get help to move it. It’s too big to do by myself any more. #Garden

Okay, bok choy and green Chinese cabbage has been planted and all buttoned up under bug mesh, ready for the coming rain. (Old horse bedding makes good mulch and fertilizer.) #lowtunnel I was cutting down last season's dead #asparagus fronds in the #garden and look what I found! They're up early! 😲 #GardeningMastodon

I now know the plantain-leaved sedges (Carex plantaginea) will provide the first flowers of the #garden. Eventually, the rabbits move on to other meals but these sedges are very popular right now. #NativePlants #gardening #NorthernIllinois #BloomScrolling

Every year I mark when the first daffodils open up. This year, flowers just started opening up yesterday (15 March) amid temperatures in the mid 70s F/25 C, when this photograph was taken. Temperatures are falling all day today, with cold winds and the occasional shower. As I type, the mercury is now below 40F/4C, on its way to 20F/-7C. So I do not expect to many more buds to open up in the next few days, at least not until temperatures get back up over 50F/10C again on Thursday. BTW, last year, the daffodils started blooming on 20 March. #garden #gardening #daffodils #spring

First sighting of a pair of ducks this year. I had seen the male and the female earlier but today is the first time that I saw them together. I approached carefully to say 'hello' and supply a little more breakfast, expecting them to be shy initially. They weren't - both were supremely relaxed with me and confident. They are also used to me pointing the camera at them. We know each other well from previous years. #ducks #mallard #MallardDucks #wildlife #GardenWildlife #WildlifePhotography #ArtistsGarden #ImperfectGarden #garden #gardener #gardening #GardenPhotography #Artist #wolfkettler #Photography #GardenWiltshire #WiltshireGarden #Wiltshire #spring #natural #NaturalGarden
