Really stupid computer question. Does the IP address of my #NAS ever change? It feels like it shouldn't. And yet after weeks of it all being fine, #Jellyfin seemed to have the wrong address. I'm asking for a moron, not myself obviously. #AskFedi

See this very tiny pill? It's Tennessee's thyroid med. I've been using a pill cutter to cut it into quarters, and Tennessee got one quarter twice/day. It winds up that's too large a dose, so now the vet would like me to cut the pills into eighths. I don't know if that's even possible; if not, I can do a quarter pill once/day instead of twice. Anyone have a good trick for cutting a small pill into very small pieces? #AskFedi EDIT: I know about the transdermal ointment. Sprinkling a ground up pill in his food won't work for various reasons. I'm just really asking if there's a good way to cut the pills I have into tiny pieces. If not, the vet can work with a compounding pharmacy to make pills in the dosage I need. He's good about taking tiny pills. EDIT #2: No more advice needed. @eniatitova@sfba.social brought up some good points which convinced me to get new pills at the proper dosage from a compounding pharmacy. #cats

This London trip has reminded me that it's almost impossible to navigate around quickly with any other map app beside Google Maps. There used to be a privacy frontend for it... But that no longer seems to be the case with the death of DivestOS Is there anything else like that out there? Hey fediverse tech experts, let’s say I wanted to have an activist news website that featured a;

  • blog operated by a specific group of people. Syndicating stories and accepting replies over both ActivityPub and ATProto

  • newswire that worked like an open Lemmy community, so people can add a story to the newswire just by @mentioning it

  • calendar of events that worked like a Mobilizon group

Is there any combo of existing tech I could use to put this together?

What's the deal with portable solar panels? Context: I'm looking to move further into the Mexican countryside (I'd be renting a house) where I'm told power outages are more frequent. I'm debating between no-break/UPS battery vs a proper #OffGrid setup vs a #PortableSolar setup. An off-grid setup seems formidably expensive, especially for a rented house, but does it make sense to get a portable battery + panel from, say, #Ecoflow (I see they have options in Mexico)? Their portable panels are priced significantly higher than fixed solar panels though. #AskFedi

Today's quandry: I have always, even when they were still being made, wanted an Amiga. I used one once, maybe twice. Now I'm wondering if investing in real hardware is a worthwhile pursuit. I have no real nostalgic connection to the system like I do my C64. So #askfedi / #retrocomputing folks: What is your take on diving into hardware retrocomputing for a system you've never owned?

How do you feel about video creators who use text-to-speech for narration?

Specifically, a creator who:

  1. discloses they’re using text-to-speech, and why,
  2. wrote the script themselves by hand without genAI, and
  3. iterated on the input and output until it sounds good

(This will determine whether I’m able to go back to making videos or whether I abandon the project and do something else with my free time)

EDIT: Okay, solved it! 🥳 It turns out that the solution was: Tools > Preferences > Input > Hardware acceleration to "off", then restart VLC The graphics card was somehow messing up VLC's playback it seems, so switching it off in VLC made it work. ----------------------------- Any VLC experts here? I have VLC on a Linux Mint PC and it won't play WEBM video files properly, there's sound but a blank screen. The same files on the same PC play totally fine in Celluloid, but not in VLC. Any ideas why VLC is having problems? #AskFedi #VLC #Webm

good (fri)day to you :BlobCat_Flower: does anyone know what i'm talking about please: one of our cats* stole my watch — which is my ecg, o2 sensor, and heart rate monitor — from its hangy place last night while i was in the shower and dragged it around (including down three tile stairs). the screen now has a small crack in it, and as replacing the screen will cost more than an as-new, second-hand** replacement watch :blobcatscared:, i'm trying to repair it. husband is sure that there's some kind of glue that will go into cracks in glass and fill them invisibly. he says it's wetter than water and just spreads out where it needs to be when applied. have you heard of this? if anyone could help with this, that would be amazing. thank you (and please boost, if you don't mind) *pia, destroyer of watch **i mean most watches are second-hand watches ... :BlobCat_Giggle: edited: he's not thinking of windscreen repair stuff: this was for devices and/or normal glass ... #askFedi
