So I discovered #BartonBroad in #Norfolk this afternoon. I’d been a few times to the lovely pub, the White Horse Inn, in the nearby village of Neatishead before, but always in the dark. I was blown away by how clear the water was. The reflection of the clouds on the broad was so crisp and clear. I also found walking around the boardwalk on the edge of the broad was very reminiscent of the swamps I saw in Louisiana years ago…but thankfully there wasn’t the frisson of alligators and moonshine.

@gregc@mastodonapp.uk That’s an amazing record you’ve created there! Despite having lived in #Norfolk on and off for coming up to 30 years, my experiences of the Broads have been very limited…mostly because I’ve only been on a boat on them twice and each time just for an afternoon. What are the best ones to walk near if you can can’t get in a boat?

@mjr@masto.bike @ascentale@sfba.social @bikenite@fedigroups.social Small world! Small #village! #EastWalton (Pop:87) #Norfolk Between 1999-2009 I used to live there. In those days, before everyone was used to buy things online, some dwellings had neither a number or name, and those clustered around the common, at the end of Common Lane, didn't even have a road name. So their official address was [Surname] The Common East Walton KINGS LYNN PE32 1PX Now, it seems, some of the cottages don't even have official postal addresses and just two are numbered - 7 and 8. There's a good reason for the expression #NormalForNorfolk #country #countrylife #rural #SouthNorfolk

It's been a while since I reported on our own #boat. Before coming to Cheshire I did manage to call in on the #mooring and remove the #heaters from her as, with any luck, there won't be any more #cold snaps that justify trying to stop the boat from #freezing. She really is beginning to look as if she needs a really good #clean. We had promised ourselves she'd be lifted out last #winter = but the house move got in the way and it was never arranged. #boatsthattoot #norfolk #norfolkbroads

You'll struggle to make out anything in "Today's Image" at https://rustonhouse.org.uk/ It was taken on 14 March 2014 and shows part of what was to become "The New Path" in the grounds of our old home. The second image is the same sight 16 months later. You can find out more about the first image at https://rustonhouse.org.uk/grounds/2014/140325gooddayswork.php and you can see how things developed in Part Three of the first tour of the grounds made 16 months later, found at: https://rustonhouse.org.uk/tours/150709/part03.php #woodland #wild #country #countryside #management #chainsaw #norfolk

@JugglingWithEggs@mstdn.social We got back to #Norfolk from our trip to #Cheshire last night, to find the remnants of #snow in a #plantpot beside the door. This morning we woke to find two plant troughs blown over. The third blew over in the other direction later this morning. Confirms that the #wind blows round our #yard in very #unpredictable ways.

@JugglingWithEggs@mstdn.social Wish I had a good answer to that one. Being a #boater I have never tried actually seeing the #Broads by land. Places like #Wroxham and #Horning have plenty of possibilities for #riverside views but not broads. Most Broads have edges too soggy to have roads near them and most of the banks are in private hands or the hands of organisations such as the #NationalTrust and #Norfolk #Wildlife Trust, whose priorities do not to encourage unencumbered access by the masses. Malthouse Broad, near Ranworth, must be one of the best exceptions. I've never tried to reach Salhouse or Wroxham by road, but the owner of the first offers moorings which are accessible from a car park some 800yds away and it's probably possible to explore the grounds around the sailing club at Wroxham Broad. If you don't mind being part of a party then the #NWT do have guided walks at #Hickling.

@distinctdipole@tech.lgbt My working life as a linguist means I have always been held to a high standard in my native language. #BadEnglish can equate with no more work. Both my parents left their one room village schools in #Norfolk at 14 in the 1940s. *They* wrote and spoke English of a higher standard than some today are capable of.

@iolaire Reminds me of a picture I took back in June 2006 on #Norfolk #England's #HicklingBroad. It was part of a sequence that accompanied an article in published in the magazine "Norfolk Afloat" that covered the Open Canoe #Sailing Group's visit to the #NorfolkBroads Check out: https://gregafloat.org.uk/broads/2006ocsg.php #nationalpark #canoe #boating

We have always made a #habit of #eatingout on a #Friday evening. Since our house move this has often at a #pub in the neighbouring village of #Hemsby #Norfolk Those in the #uk will be aware that the #coast is moving rapidly inland there and with each new #storm more #clifftop #houses are lost to the #sea I wonder what message the #landlord has in mind with a poster on the restaurant wall that reads: Memories Made On The Beach Last A Lifetime
