The blooms are almost finished on the azaleas (left, two quite mature Azalea x 'Girard's Rose'; right, a young Azalea x 'Girard's Fuchsia') in the front garden, which sandwich a Rhododendron x azalea that bloomed a few weeks earlier. I had not intended to get a different colour when I purchased the young azalea a few years ago to place to the right of the larger rhododendron azalea, but as the plants on the left were already in the front garden when I moved here 20 years ago, I guessed that the colour was 'fuchsia' when in fact it is 'rose'. My hope is that, if I am able to live here another 20 years, that the 'fuchsia' azalea fills out just as the 'rose' azaleas have, and the two-tone colour scheme will become a neighbourhood favourite. #garden #gardening #azalea #AzaleaGirardsFuschia #AzaleaGirardsRose

😋SWEETS🍡 From mid-April 'tsutsuji kinton' (つつじきんとん) are served in the tearoom. These sweets either mimic small round azalea bushes, or flowers growing out of rock crevices ('iwane-tsutsuji' 岩根つつじ 'azalea rooted amongst rocks'). #Kyoto #京都 #azalea #躑躅 #和菓子 #wagashi

📖SYMBOLISM🤔 In the language of flowers, 'hanakotoba' (花言葉), azaleas represent patience and modesty. While this seems odd given their fantastic colours, even in maturity they do not grow to any great height, and for most of the year they remain leafy but plain. #Japan #azalea
