RE: https://mastodon.online/@electrek/116468665233029250 Speaking from personal experience, this is spot on. The savings ARE STAGGERING. One of our trucks went from $20,000 per year to $3000, JUST IN FUEL COSTS. Never mind the cost of maintaining an ICE vs an EV which is minuscule. #EV #ElectricVehicles #electrification #Electric #Climate #ClimateChange #onpoli #canpoli #fossilfuels

The Guardian | Turkey to race ahead of EU on battery storage amid fossil fuel crisis by Ajit Niranjan Europe environment correspondent More than 33GW of battery capacity approved for Turkish grid since 2022 compared with 12-13GW in Germany Turkey has given the green light to more batteries to buffer its electricity grid than any EU member state, a report has found, in a further sign of rich countries losing steam in the race to a clean economy. More than 33GW of battery capacity have been approved in Turkey since 2022, according to the climate thinktank Ember, while the total planned and operational capacity in European frontrunners that started deploying them earlier, such as Germany and Italy, is 12-13GW. The Guardian | Drive slower, work from home and ditch the tie: the world responds to Iran war energy crisis by Ajit Niranjan Environment correspondent Oil crisis triggered by blockade of strait of Hormuz prompts emergency measures to protect supply and halt rising prices Shrinking fuel stocks and soaring prices are leading countries around the world to burn coal, ration fuel, shorten work weeks and tell citizens to stay at home. Fossil fuel supplies have reduced since the war against Iran led to the closure of the strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping route for oil and seaborne gas. The shortfall has prompted emergency measures as government’s attempt to halt rising costs that have thrown economies into chaos. Continue reading... Business news, technology, media and finance reports - France 24 | Oil supply shock hardens energy transition resolve – for some by Simon MORITZ The energy crisis over the Iran war has left some countries glad they've added more renewables, while others are doubling down on fossil fuels. But first: oil prices fall on hopes for de-escalation in the Middle East, while suspicions swirl over potential insider trading on Trump administration policies. The Guardian | More drilling in North Sea ‘not the answer’ for UK energy security, say former military leaders by Matthew Taylor Government told to focus on transition to mix of wind, solar, tidal and nuclear energy More drilling in the North Sea would do nothing to improve the UK’s energy security, former military leaders have said, as a new analysis finds no fossil fuel importer is safe from chokepoints in the global supply chain. The government should focus on a rapid transition to a mix of wind, solar, tidal and nuclear energy to ensure the UK’s future security, the former military leaders told the Guardian, as well as a programme of energy efficiency and a “major renewal” of the electricity grid. The Guardian | Fossil fuel companies finally accept the climate crisis – just not their role in it by Noah Walker-Crawford The era of corporate climate denial is over but in courts around the world the big names have shifted strategy While the US government continues to call climate change a hoax and attack the science, in courtrooms from The Hague to Honolulu, fossil fuel companies are taking a different approach. Shell, Chevron, RWE and TotalEnergies all accept that climate change is real, human-caused and serious. The era of corporate climate denial, at least in legal proceedings, is largely over. What has replaced it is a more nuanced position: accepting the science of climate change while contesting their responsibility for it. Continue reading... "In a detailed report released last week, titled The Urgent Case Against Data Centers, #FWW pointed to some of the 'documented harms caused by AI and data centers,' including: - Enormous #energy footprints: A single hyperscale data center can consume as much energy as 2 million US households. - A lifeline for #FossilFuels: The thirst for fuel is being met by keeping old #coal-fired power plants running and by building new natural gas ones. [And restarting old #NuclearPlants] - Skyrocketing electricity costs: Increased #EnergyDemand can raise residential rates, which soared 31% from 2020 to 2025 (compared to 4% from 2015 to 2020). - Drained water resources: By 2028, AI data centers could use as much water as 18.5 million households, just for cooling their servers. - An investment bubble: A handful of companies are investing in one another and increasingly turning to risky debt structures to hide the threat of the bubble. - A litany of other harms: This includes massive amounts of electronic waste (#EWaste), unrelenting noise pollution, loss of #farmland, political instability from deepfake videos, lost revenue from data center tax incentives, and child endangerment from #AI #chatbots." #NoDatacenters #NoAI #NoNukesForAI #UnrestrictedGrowth #WaterIsLife #NoisePollution #AISucks #USPol

The Guardian | Europe’s ‘staggering’ clean power gains undermined by failure to phase out fuel-burning machines by Ajit Niranjan Europe environment correspondent The EU’s reluctance to replace petrol cars and gas boilers keep it hooked on foreign fuels, say industry groupsEurope has made “staggering progress” in producing clean power but neglected efforts to phase out fuel-burning machines, the head of an industry group said as the global oil crisis deepens.Adrian Hiel, director of the Electrification Alliance, said the EU has “radically transformed” its power supply and must now focus on getting “more electricity into the stuff we use every day”.
