This is a major victory for transparency in a sector that has long been marked by secrecy, financial instability and weak public trust. Eskom generates about 90% of the country’s electricity, mainly through burning coal that it buys from South Africa’s coal mines. Eskom spends R70 billion (US$4.16 billion) a year on coal and its transport alone but until now, its contracts with the mines have been kept hidden. Debate on shark nets near Tinley Manor: Between safety and the environment A proposal by municipal authorities in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa to install shark nets on a public beach has sparked a heated public debate. This project raises questions about the legality and environmental impact of such measures, which are considered highly lethal to sharks and other marine life. Authorities say that installing the nets will protect swimmers from shark attacks, in light of the anticipated increase in visitors after the opening of a new Club Med resort in the area, scheduled for this year. Many scientists and environmentalists dispute the effectiveness of shark nets and drumlines, arguing that these measures are obsolete, as they indiscriminately kill non-target species, including those protected by South African law.
