I started out as @monkeyninja and eventually decided I wanted to run my own Mastodon instance, so here we are. I'm a dad, devoted husband to @oceanic, DevOps Engineer turned DevOps Manager, GenX geek, #ActuallyAutistic, #Jewish and wishing Israel would just stop fucking murdering people for like 30 seconds. I write about navigating life in #chronicpain, #technology, #bigotry, #ttrpg, #politics, and occasionally I'll share some of my #recipes. My kiddo is "The Zergling." I want them to have anonymity and I want them to feel that if what they were assigned at birth doesn't fit as they get older that they have choices. So until they're old enough to decide who they are and the extent they want their life online, you'll never see me post a photo of them and unless I slip up, you'll never see me post their gender. Profile photo is of me, cisgender white guy, wearing sunglasses and a black t-shirt that reads "Hilarious joke from film and or television show of which we're both familiar," sipping tea out of a white tea cup. Huh...it was surprisingly easy to get a private instance of the #Firefox sync service up and running, I'm not sure why I never thought to do this before. So now I can have my #Waterfox data sync for a backup in case anything happens to my primary system and I lose my install and it's not at all reliant on using Mozilla services that would be used to fuel their AI initiatives.

Their steps for compiling from source were complete shit, there was so much additional work needed in order to get it to compile cleanly that they do not list in their build documentation.
Honestly the container setup is so dead simple, compiling it yourself seems a waste of energy unless you're trying to build a version to run on an ARM processor or something. Anyway, I'm happy to provide what steps I had to follow to get their compilation to work on a clean VM I had just built if someone is trying to go about it the hard way.

One full week under the keel running Alpine Linux on my primary workstation. Even set root on a ZFS mirror - simple to setup. First experience with rEFInd as well - I like it.
Sharp and snappy, just like the way I like my cars! Ha!
No new revelations compared to the first few weeks on the test workstation... I'm still tweaking some things for personalization as it happens but all good.
The Alpine repos are full of good stuff and are current/up2date in a practical manner.
The only flatpaks I've had to run are Waterfox, Signal Desktop and messing around with the new CoMaps Linux version (this exists - happy! happy! joy! joy!).
I'm going to migrate my Debian Bookworm servers to Alpine when I get around to the upgrades. I'll keep clients on Debian for the foreseeable future.
I'm not sure why I'm so excited about Alpine, it just feels like a breathe of fresh air! Modern and simple. Enjoying it.

Firefox being open-source isn’t really doing much for me in this situation
Except it is. Firefox, being completely open source, has enabled a viable fork - #Waterfox - that addresses your primary concern.
You say you don’t have any faith in Firefox forks and just give in to Google and move to a re-skinned Chrome browser? This reads like a paid ad. It’s disappointing.
And privately owned just means it can be sold to the highest bidder whenever it makes financial sense to do so.
