Treetop Flare This isn’t a great image, and the composition is a little clumsy, but it captures something rare for me — a male summer tanager (Piranga rubra) flittering through a treetop. Right in the middle of a rainy moment, a tiny bird becomes the star of something truly magical—a perfect water droplet lands on its head, forming a crown-like splash that feels almost unreal. The timing is flawless, capturing a split second where nature turns playful. The photo was taken by Lee Schofer and posted by his partner, Kate Weyer, on her Facebook. #NaturePhotography #Plant #Plants #Flower #Flowers #Animal #Animals #Wildlife #WildlifePhotography #Photographer

A well-known spot nearby. I photographed this tree already many times, but never like this. The sun was warm and the atmosphere was extremely cold. At least, so I heard during the weather forecast. For me it just was a fantastic afternoon to take this beauty of a picture. Simplicity in Bloom The image shows a quiet, natural scene: a patch of lush green grass lit by soft daylight. Rising from the blades are small white blossoms of crow poison (Nothoscordum bivalve), their delicate petals standing out against the vivid green. The moment feels simple, understated, and elegant — a reminder of how easily beauty appears in the smallest corners of nature. Good morning. 🌊🌊🌊 17 April 2026 At home, I dress ultra‑casually — gym shorts and a T‑shirt, or, if it’s cooler, old worn‑out jeans with holes and a wrinkled tee. I don’t usually go out in public like that. When I leave the house, I put on clean, ironed clothes. Yes, yes, I know: irons are so 20th century. Be that as it may — and I love saying that because it sounds vaguely gangstery — I go out in public cleaned up and pressed. Still casual, but put together. It’s not what I see when I travel out among the English. (And for the record, “out among the English” is borrowed from the 1985 film Witness, where Harrison Ford plays a detective hiding in an Amish community. An Amish traveler heading to New York is warned, “Be careful out there among the English.” If you haven’t seen it, it’s worth watching.) Anyway, when I’m out in public, I often see people dressed in ways that would make me hesitate to step into my own front yard. I’m not criticizing — just observing. In a way, I find it fascinating, maybe even anthropological. Though to be fair, I only ever took the intro course in anthropology back in college. What I’ve come to realize is that everyone’s “normal” isn’t the same. People — even here in Louisiana — live in slightly different subcultures where they fit perfectly and feel not the slightest bit out of place anywhere, they go. And to be sure, I haven’t always been so self‑conscious myself. I’ve gone out in dirty, ripped gym shorts and a sleeveless tee, proudly showing off muscles I didn’t actually have. From whence I come. “You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” — Oscar Wilde “Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly.” — Charles Addams “Anthropology demands the open‑mindedness with which one must look and listen.” — Margaret Mead #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #wildlife #nature #morning #cloths #anthropolgy #normal

Jay on the Move The easiest way to catch a bird on the move is to already be snapping pictures when it leaves a known perch. Like this blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) leaping from a swing‑shaped feeder with a whole peanut in its beak. Honestly, it might have two. If you're enchanted by images of blue jays and other captivating corvids, dive into my photo gallery for a visual treat! Ahem ... A male red‑bellied woodpecker stands perched atop a female, his wings lifted in a wide, dramatic spread that suggests either a protective stance or a courtship display. The pair balance together on a slender tree limb, their sharply detailed plumage set against a soft, blurred backdrop of blue sky and natural color, creating a striking contrast between the crisp foreground and the gentle background. Egret in the Shallows I captured this image of a snowy egret (Egretta thula) one morning in Gulfport, Mississippi. The egret was hunting in a shallow tidal pool near the surf. Good morning. 🌓🌔🌕 3 April 2026 I’m sitting here watching my cursor blink while I sip my coffee. Well—I was—before deciding to type something, anything, just to get the morning moving. Every time I pause, the cursor starts blinking again, as if nudging me to keep going. The coffee is unusually good today. I finally worked my way through the ten pounds of pre‑ground coffee I accidentally ordered a while back. You might remember me mentioning that, if you’ve been subjected to the morning minutiae I tend to spill onto the page. So this morning I had relatively fresh, French‑roasted whole beans to run through the grinder. I should probably order more right away rather than risk waking up one morning with no coffee. The horror 😱. Yes, I’m a practicing coffee snob—or at least I try to be. I have to admit I’m not a very accomplished one. If coffee snobs had belts, I’d probably be a green belt. Maybe even white. After all, I buy affordable beans and use a drip coffee maker. A black belt would be brewing Jamaican Blue Mountain at a hundred bucks a pound and probably using a French press with a sense of ceremony. I’m over here in the five‑to‑seven‑dollar range. Did you know there are coffee beans that cost over a thousand dollars per pound? Ospina Dynasty runs about $1,540 per pound. I only know that because I looked it up. I can’t imagine anyone paying that much for beans of any kind—except maybe Jack. What a poor example of a coffee snob I must be. And there it is again: the blinking cursor. “What goes best with a cup of coffee? Another cup.” — Henry Rollins “You can’t wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.” — Jack London “I’m not a snob. Ask anybody. Well… anybody who matters.” — Simon Le Bon photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #fullmoon #morning #coffee

Skyward Bound This tufted titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor), its small crest lifted like a banner, grips the edge of the bird feeder as it pushes off into the air with a sunflower seed clenched firmly in its beak. A warm wash of rufous coloring shows along its flanks and lower back, standing out against the soft gray of its wings and head. Tufted titmice are a favorite among a select group of bird enthusiasts. To celebrate these charming creatures, I’ve curated a special collection dedicated entirely to them in my photo gallery. The Bold Eagle The stance of this little chipping sparrow (Spizella passerina) gives the delightful impression of a tiny bird trying its best to imitate an eagle—chest lifted, posture proud, and attitude far larger than its size. Good morning. 📚📖☕ 16 March 2026 Yesterday, Charlie and I made a Goodwill run, which means it’s time to start filling the box again. By “box,” I mean the large cardboard catch‑all in the laundry room where we toss things we no longer use but someone else might. I also drop in those little trinket gifts charities send. I never use them. Mailing labels are the lone exception — those I’ll keep. While I was at it, I pulled a couple of old technical books off my bookcase and tossed them in the back of the truck. This morning, I want to tackle the bookcase itself and finally fit the novels that have been lounging around the house back into it. I keep telling myself I should take a break from buying new books and reread some of the ones I already own. But how does one resist a new release from a favorite author? C’est la vie. Maybe what I really need is a bigger bookcase. I do wonder if keeping books counts as hoarding. It would certainly explain the little piles that keep appearing in my office. I mean, what do you do with a book you’ve just finished? You put it on the bookcase — or, if there’s no room, you put it next to the bookcase. Then the next one joins it, and the next, and so on. Eventually you look at the growing stack and think, Well, I really need to do something about that. And so it becomes out with the old and in with the new. My library has been slowly shifting from books of knowledge to books that entertain. After all, I’m done with all that going‑to‑work business. Life isn’t about what I need to know anymore — it’s about what I want to know. “Reading books is good. Rereading good books is better.” — Lawrence Clark Powell “A room without books is like a body without a soul.” — Cicero “One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person… To read is to voyage through time.” — Carl Sagan #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #nature #plants #books #library #life

Good morning. 🕊️🕊️🕊️ 6 March 2026 I’m moving slow this morning—too slow. The first thing I did after getting out of bed was take a nap, at least for as long as Charlie would allow. That window of unhindered rest turned out to be thirty minutes of the hour I had set aside for exactly that purpose. I made the mistake of leaving the back door open so Charlie could see outside, which meant he could also spot squirrels in the yard. For reasons known only to him, a squirrel sighting is reason enough to start pestering me. I’ve been retired a few years now, but back when I had to get up and go to work, there were plenty of mornings—after getting cleaned up and dressed—when I fantasized about sitting down in my recliner and going right back to sleep. But I had to soldier on and get to work. On days off, I would sometimes set my alarm for the usual time just so I could turn it off and go back to sleep. I considered that one of life’s small pleasures. I think I’ve developed a touch of age‑related laziness—pigritia senilis. It sounds like something I made up, which I did, but if you look it up you’ll find a surprising amount of information. My joking around may have turned into a small science project about the physiologic changes of aging. Interestingly, I first read that as “psychotic changes,” which might not be entirely inaccurate. The forces at work include aging‑related fatigue, reduced executive function, psychomotor slowing, anergia, motivational decline, frailty syndrome, cognitive slowing, and apathy. It helps to stay active, though. I lift weights once or twice a week to keep my strength up, but I have to admit that motivational decline is noticeable. “I don’t feel old. I don’t feel anything until noon. Then it’s time for my nap.” - Bob Hope “Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened.” -Terry Pratchett #photo #photography #photographer #wildlife #nature #bird #birds #birding #birdwatching #birdphotography #pigeons #doves
