This is how it ends... Six of the Magnificent Seven bet everything on cloud AI, pouring billions into warehouses of NVIDIA GPUs, sucking electricity and guzzling water. Apple didn't go this way, and in this video I make the case that #Apple has already won the AI race, and explain why a Medium piece by Michal Malewicz argues the catalyst that bursts the bubble won't be an #NVIDIA earnings miss or an #OpenAI funding crunch, it'll be a 128GB Mac Mini. https://youtu.be/SmuX-Al7DUs?si=jp1uGvcd-LXss_L6 #ai #llm

Google has announced plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the developer of Claude AI. The previous record was $13 billion from Microsoft into OpenAI. Amazon had already given Anthropic $4 billion. Three tech giants are now financially tied to the three leaders of the frontier AI race. Independent players at this level have effectively disappeared. Computing power is controlled by the same cloud providers. Training data flows from platforms owned by the same corporations. Talent is recruited by whoever has the deepest pockets. This is not competition. This is structural monopoly. Anthropic markets itself as a safety-first AI lab with Constitutional AI. The question remains: who writes the constitution? A private company now dependent on Google and Amazon. Corporate oversight of "safe AI" is not neutral academic process. It is the definition of allowable knowledge through the lens of business interests. When you talk to Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini, your conversations are stored on corporate servers. Official reason: improving models. Default setting: data collection. You can opt out if you find the buried setting. Most users never will. The alternative is not utopian. Open models like Meta LLaMA 4 and Mistral AI can run locally on your own hardware. Ollama and LM Studio provide one-command installation. Local AI means no data collection. No corporate control. No surveillance. Frontier models are more capable. But for most daily tasks, open models are sufficient. The question is not technical. It is structural. And the window for keeping AI as a public good rather than a corporate asset is closing. https://newsgroup.site/google-40-billion-anthropic-ai-monopoly-open-source/ #AI #Monopoly #Google #Anthropic #OpenAI #Microsoft #Amazon #OpenSource #Privacy #LocalAI

Sam Altman, the co‑founder and CEO of OpenAI, issued a public apology after his company failed to alert police about an account that was later linked to a deadly shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, where eight people were killed. In a letter posted on the province’s premier’s social media, Altman expressed his deepest condolences to the victims’ families and the community, acknowledged the company’s missed opportunity to refer the account—identified in June through abuse‑detection tools—to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police because it did not meet an internal threshold for law‑enforcement referral, and pledged to work with governments to improve safeguards and prevent future tragedies. People are very worried that "Open"-AI is no more a non-profit company. Looking at their business numbers, they are still non-profit and will be for a long time. #openai

#codex #openai #vscode

yahoo news | Wisconsin voters deal blow to Trump’s data center dreams Wisconsin voters in Port Washington—a small Milwaukee suburb—have just delivered a significant setback to President Donald Trump’s push for massive data‑center projects. The community approved, by roughly a two‑to‑one margin, a measure that requires city officials to obtain voter approval before granting tax‑subsidized districts to developers. The initiative was prompted by a Trump‑backed AI data center being constructed in the town, which will be operated by OpenAI and Oracle—companies whose leaders, Sam Altman and Larry Ellison, are allies of the president. The approved referendum does not halt the existing $15 billion, 1.3‑gigawatt facility, part of the broader “Stargate” AI megaprojects backed by the administration, but it does target future developments by mandating voter consent for any lucrative tax incentives awarded to developers. While the measure is already being challenged in court, its passage signals strong local opposition to the rapid, controversial rollout of data‑center infrastructure that critics claim could strain the environment and raise energy costs for nearby residents. Politico notes that this is the first referendum of its kind nationwide and could inspire similar votes in other states, potentially creating a wave of grassroots resistance to Trump’s data‑center agenda. As more referendums are slated for other jurisdictions, voters may increasingly be given the power to “throw sand in the gears” of the president’s AI‑focused infrastructure plans. undefined | Meta debuts new AI model, attempting to catch Google, OpenAI after spending billions Meta has unveiled its first major large‑language model since hiring Scale AI’s chief AI officer Alexandr Wang, introducing “Muse Spark” (formerly codenamed Avocado) through its new Muse series. Developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the model is designed to be small, fast, and efficient while still capable of handling complex scientific, mathematical, and health‑related queries. Unlike Meta’s recent open‑source Llama 4 family, Muse Spark will initially be proprietary, with a private API preview available to select partners and plans for a broader paid API offering later. The company says the model’s rebuilt AI stack and new training techniques allow it to deliver performance comparable to larger midsize models at a fraction of the compute cost. The launch is a strategic move to regain momentum in a generative‑AI market now dominated by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google’s Gemini. Meta hopes Muse Spark’s competitive performance in multimodal perception, reasoning, health, and agentic tasks will help close gaps with rivals, especially in long‑horizon agentic systems and coding workflows. The model will power Meta’s standalone AI app and website, and will roll out in the coming weeks across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Ray‑Ban Meta AI glasses, and eventually the Vibes video feature. New user modes—Instant for quick answers, Thinking for complex prompts, and a forthcoming Contemplating mode that leverages a squad of AI agents—aim to give developers and consumers flexible ways to interact with the technology. Meta is also stepping up its AI infrastructure spending, projecting $115‑$135 billion in AI‑related capex for 2026—nearly double the prior year—as it strives to keep pace with other hyperscalers. While the company continues to use AI to enhance its advertising business and internal efficiencies, it has yet to capture a significant share of the broader AI model market. Nonetheless, shares rose about 8 % after the announcement, reflecting investor optimism that Muse Spark could be a foothold for Meta in a sector expected to grow from roughly $22 billion in 2025 to $325 billion by 2033. yahoo news | Sam Altman's (Not So) New Deal for Superintelligent AI OpenAI’s newly released “Industrial Policy for the Intelligence Age: Ideas to Keep People First” attempts to shape a future with super‑intelligent AI by proposing portable benefit platforms that separate health insurance and retirement plans from any single employer, and by suggesting that AI could handle the administrative overhead of starting a business. The paper champions “startup‑in‑a‑box” solutions—standardized contracts and shared back‑office services—to help innovators move quickly from idea to scale, echoing arguments from Kevin Frazier of the Abundance Institute that such tools could accelerate the creation of multibillion‑dollar enterprises. However, the policy also recommends a series of tax and fiscal measures that critics argue would dampen innovation. OpenAI calls for higher capital‑gains and corporate‑income taxes at the top end, as well as the creation of a public wealth fund to let every citizen invest in AI‑related growth assets—though the fund’s financing is left unspecified. Research from the Cato Institute links higher corporate tax rates to reduced research‑and‑development spending and fewer patents, while higher capital‑gains taxes tend to discourage startup investment, potentially slowing economic progress at a time when AI could drive massive productivity gains. The paper further calls for an expansion of existing safety‑net programs—food stamps, unemployment insurance, Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare—asserting they must be fully functional and responsive during the AI transition. While updating safety nets may be necessary, the authors argue that merely attaching AI to flawed legacy systems will not solve underlying problems; instead, a fundamental reevaluation of these systems is required. The proposal’s optimism about the government’s ability to allocate billions effectively is seen as naive, especially when contrasted with more measured alternatives, such as focusing on expanding energy infrastructure rather than imposing moratoria on data‑center construction.
