Weekend Side Note If a hypothetical investment fund of significant size, say $180B, were to badly underperform for 2025, the results have serious implications. In Canada, the TSX performed an astoundingly rare return of 28.5%. A well- managed fund performing at the rate of the market should expect a return of $50B resulting in a fund sized around $230B at year end. If a hypothetical, poorly managed investment fund gained, say, a paltry 7.5% on such a generously giving market year, they should get a return of around $14B and final fund total of $194B at year end. Counted in billions, 14 can appear a big number unless weighed against its absence of return. The poorly managed fund has actually incurred a short-term “loss of gains” in a rarely generous year of around $35B. In the long term, over say the next ten years, that loss of $35B increases, at a yearly return of the initial paltry 7.5% (normally good for an underperforming year), to roughly double or $70B. Fortunately, if the hypothetical fund continues under its current mismanagement, the ten-year 7.5% return is unlikely, thereby reducing the “missed out on” $70B to around $40B as best, or in this case worst, result from an extreme hypothesis of missing funds during one calendar year. Such “loss of gains” exaggerated annually accumulate to massive losses of squandered opportunity over decades. In the real world, it is merely $14B thanks to the generous “hard to lose” market year, and the loss of opportunity goes unchecked while the pennies get counted. #how #money #works

Good morning. 🥬🥬🥬 11 February 2026 Money is a strange invention when you stop and think about it. We trade real things—our time, our labor, our needs—for little pieces of paper that we can then trade for something else. And these days, we don’t even touch the paper. Instead, we’re given digital credits in accounts held by financial institutions that promise to hand over the paper if we ever ask for it. Most of the time, though, we just swipe a little plastic card and the value moves from one place to another. I’m not entirely sure where I’m going with this, except to say that most transactions now happen electronically. Maybe I’ve wandered into a subject that’s a bit bigger than I intended. I can still remember the first ATM I ever used. Early ’80s, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Before that, if I wanted cash, I had to walk into the bank and write a check, or buy something with a check and write it for twenty dollars over—back when that was common. I think it still happens, but you don’t see many people writing checks in the supermarket anymore. What really amazed me came around the turn of the century. My wife and I had just returned to the States after three years in Germany, and suddenly people were paying for gas right at the pump with credit cards. I thought that was wonderful. No more going inside, no more prepaying—which always annoyed me. You just slip in your card, pump your gas, and drive away. I’m out of room now, but I was starting to think about the full‑service stations of years past. Another time, maybe. “Money is a strange business. People who haven’t got it, worry about it. So, a company too small to have to file accounts in the UK manages to find £200k to donate to Reform? More evidence that the funding of political parties (or limited companies that pretend to be so) needs drastic reform. Foreign interference, be that through social media or money bedevils British politics.
