Paying without #Google: New consortium in #Europe wants to remove #customROM hurdles Using #banking and payment apps on #Android smartphones with custom ROMs is a problem: A European industry consortium now wants to change that. It is an #opensource alternative to #GooglePlayIntegrity. This proprietary interface decides on Android smartphones with #GooglePlay services whether banking, government, or wallet apps are allowed to run on a smartphone. https://www.heise.de/en/news/Paying-without-Google-New-consortium-wants-to-remove-custom-ROM-hurdles-11204037.html

What is the digital euro? A guide to the future of cash in Europe. The European Central Bank (ECB) is working towards the launch of the digital euro – an electronic version of public money – with the aim of providing a safe, secure public option for making digital payments. The EU aims to launch the currency by 2029, but digital literacy and security are possible barriers. https://mediafaro.org/article/20260414-what-is-the-digital-euro-a-guide-to-the-future-of-cash-in-europe?mf_channel=mastodon&action=forward #DigitalEuroEurozone #EU #Money #Banking #Finance #CBDC #Europe

Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia are soon enabling offline debit card payments for at least seven days without network connectivity. The change covers payments for essential goods in physical trade, such as food, medicine, and fuel. Each country has made - or is in the process of making - the required changes to their related regulations to enable it. The motivation for this change is to enable payments even in exceptional situations such as network disruptions due to sabotage or conflict. TL;DR: You can pay for essentials even if Russia cuts the cables. Plans for this change were announced in May 2025: https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/nordics-estonia-plan-offline-card-payment-back-up-if-internet-cut-2025-05-07/ #resilience #preparedness #infrastructure #payments #banking
