I really should get back into #astrophotography this year. Last year was marred by both bad weather and brainfog. Here's an image from 2024.

Messier 3. A globular cluster containing about 500,000 stars. It doesn’t have a cool “common name” and I find that sad. That means we get to name it, right? I propose Globby McGlobface. Submissions are open until May 8th. I’ll publish the best one in my very unscientific journal. 📷 Sony a7 IV, Z61 II, 2 hours. #Astrophotography #Space #Astronomy 🔭

Hubble vs. My Backyard's Scope! First of all, happy B'day Hubble Space Telescope! Still the OG space-based telescope that changed our perspective of the Universe. For the B'day, NASA/ESA released an image of a section of the Trifid Nebula (left). You can see a nodule from inside the nebula and a thin stellar jet formed by a young stellar object buried inside the cloud. That's about 0.75 light-years in length. On the right is my 1-hour photo from my backyard - and the jet appears there too! Unlike Hubble, my backyard rig only has a 20cm aperture and has a whole lot of atmosphere, as well as city lights, to deal with. So it is really neat to be able to get that level of detail in 1 hour of observing. It might not have won my #GoldStar for our #constellation Sagitta (listen here for more https://starrytimepodcast.podbean.com/e/sagitta-cosmic-background/) but I'm always gonna celebrate a globular cluster!!! This is Messier 71, it's located 13,000 LY from Earth & 27 LY across. 📷 :https://esahubble.org/images/potw1018a/ #astronomy #AstroDon #astrophotography #space #science #stars #GlobularCluster #Sagitta #Constellations

🇬🇧 A new comet is visible with the naked eye ! C/2025 R3 (PanSTARRS) is an Oort cloud comet which will reach perihelion (the closest distance) on the 19th, before going away forever. This morning, I loaded my backpack and set up to capture it. I wanted to see it rise next to the Bietschhorn (3 934). The comet is currently in the Pegasus constellation, just below 51 Pegasi, the first star known to host an exoplanet. If you have clear skies, you should definitely try to see it : It is bright, and will pass only once! It already shows a very long tail, more than 10° long. The image was taken with a 120-300 lens, set at 180mm. It is an ethical composite: I first captured the foreground with the tracking off (5 x 15s) and then turned the tracking on when the comet reached the desired position (120 x 15s). #Astrophotography #Comet #PanSTARRS

Astro post! It's been a bit, but here's an image of a favorite subject I captured over the winter: Thor's Helmet Nebula. This object trails Orion in the night sky and is pretty low on my horizon. Most images are just Hydrogen and Oxygen, but I grabbed Sulfur data as well and included it in my processing. Arachnophobia Sensitive
Last night was my first expedition to "the spot" of my astronomy club, with a fellow member. Everything went according to plan, except for one thing... They warned me about the occasional wild boar, but not about that 🤣 #astronomy #astrophotography
