A minor political earthquake shook #Kent this morning after the #GreenParty defied expectations to snatch victory at a crunch by-election. The Greens’ decisive win in the #Cliftonville division of Kent County Council (#KCC) came after an intense two month campaign into which four of the main parties threw huge resources For #Reform UK, it was the first by-election to be fought since their massive victory at KCC last year and was regarded as a “must win” But they did not win. They failed.

The best start to a Friday…#GreenParty ‘s Hannah Spencer wins #GortonAndDenton byelection…and pushes #Labour who had had a comfortable majority there into third place. “Rather than winning narrowly, the [Green party] won 40.7%, enough to put them as much as 12 points ahead of second placed #Reform. It represented as much as a 27.5 point increase on the party’s share in 2024. Labour, who had not hitherto lost an election in the area since 1931, fell into third place.” Professor Sir John Curtice

Now why would #Reform be interested in making the UK health system more like the (failed) US system? It is initially surprising that the US system might be a favoured destination. But there is a dimension, which is not a concern to UK taxpayers or patients but is vitally important to other stakeholders: PROFIT. The US system is particularly good as a profit generator. Estimates suggest that the profit opportunity available to healthcare corporations if the UK adopted the US system is of the order of $28 Billion per annum. So, using this approach, this Reform government could reduce the effectiveness of our health system (earlier deaths), and reduce efficiency (for higher costs), whilst making a nice little profit for themselves and their mates.

Honestly, from Manchester, I can't see a worse person than Man Utd owner Jim Ratcliffe to endorse Reform. City fans hate him, United fans hate him even more. And in a city where everything comes second to football, this matters. #UKPolitics #Reform
