I wonder if modern tech could correctly illuminate vertical #RGB phosphor stripes (as in the #Trinitron) on a #CRT with a single electron gun and no shadow mask. This was a Hard Problem™ when color TV was first being invented. The shadow mask and aperture grille were invented to solve the problem by stopping the beams from hitting the wrong color. But now we have gigahertz-speed electronics. Could those modulate the beam with precise enough timing to not need a shadow mask or aperture grille?

Have you ever seen electrons? Watch this! I got an old Narva BR-2 cathode ray tube (Braun'sche Röhre) that was made for educational purposes. It has some Neon gas inside that makes the electron beam visible. The second tube in this video is a voltage regulator OD3A that also "glows" nicely. #electron #CRT #cathoderaytube #electronics #physics #science https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOAEv-jZarM

Okay, with all the changes and ill-will towards the old cart: it's time to beat up on some FF6 bad guys! https://youtube.com/live/LR2DyhOPeFA?feature=share #retrogaming #crt #snes #ff6

Okay, the setup is solid now. SCART into the gscart switch which splits the output. One goes to the Sony PVM-2530, the other output goes to the RetroTINK 4K. I tried to get the colors to match somewhat on the CRT, but it’s a fool’s errand to be honest. However, once work is over it’ll be time to progress more in FF6.

Took a day to track down an interesting issue: an absolute ton of noise coming out of the gscart SCART switch. It was bad going through the RetroTINK 5X and intolerable coming through the RetroTINK 4K. Started with the SNES, swapped out cables and it was still there. Then copied the ROM and save state over to the MiSTer and saw the same exact issue with analog output from the MiSTer.

It was weird because the SNES is RGB modded via Voultar’s SNESRGB and should have some absolutely pristine RGB out, and the MiSTer should also have some great RGB output via the Saturn RGB output on the back. However, after some fiddling and upgrading the MiSTer: it was the USB power going to the gscart switch.

I was using the USB outputs on the power strip attached to the AV cart. After moving it to a known quality USB power adapter, the noise was gone.

TL,DR: If you have a gscart switch, make sure you supply it with some quality power otherwise you’re gonna have a bad day.

I may still feel like crap and not have gotten enough sleep due to coughing, but that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna relax and play some quality* games this weekend. The MiSTer is running perfectly and the PVM is still working like a champ.
