George Washington Carver, best known for his scientific innovations, was also an artist who experimented with natural pigments since childhood. These paint swatches at the GW Carver Museum at Tuskegee show the color palettes he developed using natural #clay from Alabama. He freely shared recipes detailing the process of turning clay into house paint so that those with little or no money could still enjoy beautiful surroundings. #BlackFedi #AddToBlacksky #WildClay #art #BlackHistory

On January 27, 1955, less than three weeks after Marian Anderson became the first Black person to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, Robert McFerrin Sr. became the first Black man to sing at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1956, McFerrin played Rigoletto at the Met, thus becoming the first African American to sing a title role there. He also provided the singing to which Sidney Poitier lip-synched in the 1959 film version of Porgy and Bess. McFerrin married Sara Cooper, also an opera singer. They had two children; their son is Bobby McFerrin of "Don't Worry Be Happy" fame and their daughter Brenda is a Motown recording artist. Bobby has three children, of whom two are musicians and one is an actor. #BlackHistory #opera #music #BlackMusic https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_McFerrin?wprov=sfla1

Rev. Jesse Jackson’s “keep hope alive” speech at the 1988 DNC "You must not surrender. You may or may not get there but just know that you’re qualified. And you hold on, and hold out. We must never surrender. America will get better and better. Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive. On tomorrow night and beyond, keep hope alive!" #JesseJackson #BlackHistory https://blknewsnow.com/rev-jesse-jacksons-keep-hope-alive-speech-at-the-1988-dnc/

Moved by his ancestors, Ken Johnston retraced 1,300 kilometres of the Underground Railroad to learn about Ontario’s early Black settlers "An estimated 30,000 to 40,000 freedom seekers pushed to Canada. They came overland on foot, but when possible also used trains, horses, wagons and carriages. Ships carried them across the Detroit, Niagara or St. Lawrence rivers and through the Great Lakes to port towns like Owen Sound." #UndergroundRailroad #BlackHistory https://thenarwhal.ca/ontario-northern-underground-railroad-walk/

Today in 1946, Isaac Woodard was honorably discharged from the US Army. On his way home he traveled through South Carolina. A racist bus driver had Woodard arrested, and the police beat him, striking his head with billy clubs until he had amnesia and "each globe was ruptured irreparably in the socket," leaving him blind. This is why we need DEI - this is the Equity part. This event is still within living memory for some of our grandparents. Woodard lived until 1992 - he lived 26 years with sight, and then another 46 years blinded. The man who blinded him also outlived him, keeping his eyes and his privileged social status, never punished, until 1997. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Woodard The obituary of the man who beat and blinded him demonstrates how little the event mattered in his life: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/225045507/lynwood_lanier-shull #blackhistory #civilrights #racism

Julian McKenzie, a dear friend and godfather of my son, has written a book on Black hockey history, which I enjoyed and probably people who follow hockey would enjoy even more - you can see an interview about it here and buy it most places : https://youtu.be/eVKimpkNVzc #hockey #BlackHistory

“Knowing what must be done does away with fear.” Periodic reminder that Rosa Parks was part of a community that trained for resistance and civil disobedience. Parks was an organizer and activist. She did not simply “decide to sit down one day.” These moments are not about us as individuals. These moments are about forming and supporting community that includes us. Together, we are less afraid. Happy Birthday, Rosa Parks #BlackHistory #history
