SO IT’S #Autism Awareness Month?

since am one of those #ActuallyAutistic people Dx at the tender age of 50 (yes, 50. and yes am older now, shut up), am not acquainted with the american rituals of national days or awareness months involving autism.

welp, let me do this as a gentle reminder:

  1. BLACK
  2. INDIGENOUS
  3. PUERTO RICAN
  4. CARIBBEAN
  5. LATINOAMERICANES
  6. WOMEN

can be #autistic too.

and in my case: #dyslexic with a sprinkling of good ol’ extra spicy #ADHD.

but ironically, 🧵

#ActuallyAutistic #buro

@electricbraindump@mementomori.social Welcome! I'm not sure if we have a specifically AuDHD group here but there's lots of autistic folks. Check out @autistics@fedigroups.social and #ActuallyAutistic for some connections. You might also enjoy this site, we watch all kinds of music videos and lesser known movies. https://dumb-industries.com/weird

I’ve avoided plenty of social situations in my life, but I’ve never actually followed through with my fantasy of becoming a hermit in the woods. 1/3 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity

For people out there who are starting on the "am I autistic" journey, and are feeling the bite of imposter syndrome. Does it help to replace "autistic" with "a person who is allowed to say what their needs are, and claim those needs without having to apologize" ? You're allowed to do that even if you're not autistic. That doesn't mean it doesn't matter whether or not you're autistic. It does! You need accurate information about yourself. Don't stop that search. But you're allowed to claim your needs whether or not you are autistic. You get to decide what your needs are, and who you are. Even if you are not autistic. Even if it's "just" anxiety and depression, that doesn't make you broken or wrong, too sensitive, or too much. There is nothing shameful about being the way you are, whatever your neuro-status. You are allowed to take up space, and have inconvenient needs, and decide for yourself who you are. #ActuallyAutistic

Western society has a complicated history with mental health. Many people have been demonized, cast aside, and worse, when they didn’t meet artificial, unrealistic, standards for mental health. 1/2 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Neurodiversity #NeuroDivergent #Neurodiverse #ND

I spent years thinking shared lunches were a struggle for everyone. I assumed we all just suffered through them out of politeness. Realizing that most people actually enjoy this (that it even recharges them) hit me like a total system crash. For me, social interaction is a crisis. I feel like a tiny person locked inside my head, desperately trying to pilot a "meat robot" that is in emergency mode, scanning for the nearest exit to save my sanity. It is a strange feeling when you realize your "normal" was actually a high-alert survival protocol. My battery just leaks in public. I mean, even talking with a colleague 1-on-1. And it's not a "social battery", it's the main and only one I have. #Neurodivergent #ActuallyAutistic #Masking #SocialOverload #MentalHealth #TechPhilosophy #Health #Thoughts #Fediverse

Today is officially #WorldAutismAwarenessDay, designated by the United Nations as day of recognition and appreciation. This kicks off #AutismAwarenessMonth, which many of us call #AutismBewarenessMonth because it’s always much more about “here’s how bad autism is” than “here’s how to make autistic people’s lives better”. When we want to be more positive than snarky, we call it #AutismAcceptanceMonth, because it’s better to be accepted than for people to be aware of us mainly as a set of problems.

The problem with the above is that all that awareness and acceptance is something that allistic people are supposed to do, so the occasion centers allistic people instead of autistic people. The whole month is about how allistic people think and feel about us – it’s not actually about us at all!

But over on Bluesky, Aslynn (@audhd-psychnp.com) hit on some better branding: Autistic People’s Month! I really like this, as it centers us in our own celebration. #AutisticPeoplesMonth is not about how anyone else feels about us, but about our own existence, accomplishments, problems, and all the rest. I hope this catches on, so doing my part to make it happen. April is now ours!

Every self-employed Autistic I work with blames themselves. They're exhausted, stressed, wondering if they're cut out for this. But they're not the problem. Standard business advice wasn't built for neurodivergent brains. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity 1/2

#ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD What I needed to do to manage to fill out a single form for the social welfare office. -Take a two-hour shutdown nap in preparation -A careful mix of sedatives and diet cola to optimize my functional capabilities -Go to bathroom three times for emergency jettison of extraneous weight After-action report: Apprx 45% functionality achieved. My tummy feels like there's crude oil reserves there, I have a nasty migraine-like headache, and the next shutdown is coming on shortly. But only slight dissociation! So all and all fairly successful operation.

Right, here we go, ExpectoMode activated. Got a short trip this weekend, a bit longer trip over the Easter, and then The Move in mid-April. Already my tummy feels like I've swallowed a roto-rooter and... Let's just say irritable doesn't quite do it, let's call it irate... :meow_sweat: #ActuallyAutistic

Life with administrative trauma day 4472. Need documentation from authorities. Request said documentation. Dread the said documentation and when it comes, as there's bound to be issues with it and you're in trouble. Feel relief there's no mail waiting when coming home. At the same time, dread not having gotten the documentation yet, even if you just requested it a day ago, as something has obviously gone wrong and you're in trouble. Be anxious why there is no mail waiting when you come home. #ActuallyAutistic

Yesterday I felt pretty toasted after work. I had band rehearsals in the evening, and that requires approx. 40 minutes of driving to one direction. As I commute by bus, it's by far the most I drive during an average week -- unless it's the summer cottage season, which it isn't at the moment. I've recently understood that driving is potentially pretty stressful for me. I've used to blast some rock/metal on my way to the rehearsals to get in the mood. However, I've also started to understand that combined with stressful environment, loud music is absolutely the wrong choice. Silence is not an option, I need some aural stimulation for my driving, and I very much prefer albums to radio. So, I decided to put on some relatively quiet music. That was a great choice! As usual, the rehearsals were fun, and with my choice of driving music I actually felt less tired when I was driving back home. It was a small change in my routine but listening to myself made a huge difference in the end. #ActuallyAutistic @autistics@fedigroups.social
