I’ve avoided plenty of social situations in my life, but I’ve never actually followed through with my fantasy of becoming a hermit in the woods. 1/3 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity

Western society has a complicated history with mental health. Many people have been demonized, cast aside, and worse, when they didn’t meet artificial, unrealistic, standards for mental health. 1/2 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Neurodiversity #NeuroDivergent #Neurodiverse #ND

Today is officially #WorldAutismAwarenessDay, designated by the United Nations as day of recognition and appreciation. This kicks off #AutismAwarenessMonth, which many of us call #AutismBewarenessMonth because it’s always much more about “here’s how bad autism is” than “here’s how to make autistic people’s lives better”. When we want to be more positive than snarky, we call it #AutismAcceptanceMonth, because it’s better to be accepted than for people to be aware of us mainly as a set of problems.

The problem with the above is that all that awareness and acceptance is something that allistic people are supposed to do, so the occasion centers allistic people instead of autistic people. The whole month is about how allistic people think and feel about us – it’s not actually about us at all!

But over on Bluesky, Aslynn (@audhd-psychnp.com) hit on some better branding: Autistic People’s Month! I really like this, as it centers us in our own celebration. #AutisticPeoplesMonth is not about how anyone else feels about us, but about our own existence, accomplishments, problems, and all the rest. I hope this catches on, so doing my part to make it happen. April is now ours!

Every self-employed Autistic I work with blames themselves. They're exhausted, stressed, wondering if they're cut out for this. But they're not the problem. Standard business advice wasn't built for neurodivergent brains. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity 1/2

I have been working most of my life to try and fit into the standard neurotypical system, but also to try and break out of it. The system has never worked in my head. 1/2 #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent

Many aspects of our lives are shaped by strong social pressures, happenstance, luck, and (mis)fortune, that don’t necessarily reflect our actual preferences, yet it’s common that other people assume that’s what we wanted. Or we believe that lie ourselves, and we blame ourselves for not “making better choices”. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity

It's so exhausting pretending to be a normal person every single day, only to be asked: "what are you so stressed about?" When you're literally just surviving day to day, hearing questions like that is physically painful, because it's impossible to answer them, and honestly, nobody really gives a damn about the answer anyway. I feel like I'm trapped inside myself. The funniest part is that I can't even pull off being completely "normal" anyway - it just leads to burnout. #asd #neurodiversity

You deserve to have the capacity for having a life, for being able to engage with special interests, with friends, with family, with activities, with just resting, with whatever it is that makes you come alive. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity

When I was a kid and complained the ice cream was cold, they laughed at me. When I fought my mom putting on tights, she would get exasperated. When I "went into a sulk" over a change of plans, they said it wasn't a big deal and I should just get over it. Labeling it "not a big deal" was a way for them to get off the hook of having to deal with what was really going on. https://youtube.com/shorts/b_EZ_iPFoaE?feature=share #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity

April is coming — and so is an important conversation. The narrative around autism is changing — and I want to be part of that conversation. I'm available for media appearances and interviews. https://www.autismchrysalis.com/speaking-interviews/ #AutismAcceptance #ActuallyAutistic #NeurodiversityMovement #AutisticAdults #Neurodiversity #PublicSpeaker #AutismAwareness

My brain finds that it’s hard to predict a lot of the world and a lot of people. And so I tend to find comfort in trying to make things into absolutes. So things tend to be sorted into an all or a nothing, especially when I’m stressed. And one of my biggest revelations was, it’s not all or nothing. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity #Acceptance

I spent years feeling like my body was overreacting to things other people brushed off. It made more sense when I realised most of my rules about what is and is not 'safe' were written in childhood. Of course that stuff is still affecting you. That is when you learned what did and did not feel safe. https://youtube.com/shorts/_U6Prl9q9zw?feature=share #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurospicy #Neurodiversity

Sometimes it might be difficult to figure out whether it’s actually a negative thought or the practicalities of the situation, especially as some of these negative thoughts feel really true, and you’re so used to thinking them that it’s hard to tell. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity #Anxiety

People want to know that they’re making a difference. So when they do something kind for you and you write a thank-you, you’re cluing them in to what difference their time, attention, or effort made. And for most people on the receiving end of that, that feels really good. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity #healthycommunication #healthyrelationships

The systems in our society are deeply broken. Autistics often feel the effects earlier and more strongly, but people of all kinds are burning out in record numbers because we can't keep this up much longer. #ActuallyAutistic #AuDHD #Autistic #Neurodiversity #Burnout
