When a Writer Does More Than One Thing I used to balk at the thought of sharing my day job with readers at my author events. My inner monologue went like this: They’ll think it’s pedantic! They’ll think you’re an impostor! They’ll wonder why your books haven’t made you money! They’ll laugh at you because you’re not a full time author! And once again, my inner monologue was some mustache-twirling villain sent to me by my brain’s dreadful HR person who never hires the right consultant. Shh.  I fired that consultant a few weeks ago. Sent that mustache-twirling villain straight out of my mind and changed the locks. Here’s why… https://writerunboxed.com/2026/03/05/when-a-writer-does-more-than-one-thing/ #REALWORLD #Writinglife #dayjobs #JillianForsberg #writinglife

Who Are You? Part Two Do you remember the scene in that classic film What about Bob? in which Bob arranges to have himself tied to the mast of a sailboat? He wants to be included in his friends’ activities despite his fears, and as the boat goes forward he yells with pride, “I’m sailing! I’m a sailor! I sail!” We chuckle, but what exactly makes this scene so funny? I think it’s the absurd juxtaposition of an identity claim with evidence that it’s not true. I love this scene because those statements represent three overlapping but not identical realities. To get grammar-nerdy about it: The present participle “I’m sailing” implies that this occurrence is happening right now, but might not happen regularly. I’m not swimming or walking. I’m sailing. https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/26/who-are-you-part-two/ #CRAFT #REALWORLD #character #identity

The Twilight of Literacy…? I swear, I know what the word doomscrolling means. After all, it’s been around since the twenty-teens, and was added to dictionaries several years ago now. I’ve regularly used the term, even in essays here on WU. I thought I had a pretty good grasp of what doomscrolling felt like. But I’ve noticed something lately. Something scary. My own scrolling sessions have grown darker and more enthralling. And longer. Worse, I’m pretty sure the change is exactly what the platforms are designed to engender. Coming away from these sessions feels like emerging from a daze. I feel fraught, even physically agitated. I haven’t measured my post-scrolling heartrate or blood pressure, but I’m certain they are affected. So why am I partaking? https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/25/the-twilight-of-literacy/ #REALWORLD #Declineinliteracy #Doomscrolling #Readingandmentalhealth #Writerssupportingliteracy

Practicing Radical Gratitude Though today’s post is not an insightful rumination on fiction craft or the publishing business, and isn’t as polished as I might wish it to be, I hope you’ll stick with me. This is a post about gratitude. This is me saying a heartfelt thank you to anyone reading it, and to those I spent time with at the recent UnConference where I felt such a deep sense of community, and to whatever powers the universe. https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/24/practicing-radical-gratitude/ #REALWORLD #ThereseAnneFowler #writinglife

When Friday the 13th Meets Valentine’s Day This is the second month in a row where the post I anticipated writing has been preempted by events—this time, by the calendar. Given the conjunction of two of the year’s most emotionally charged days, how could I not write about fear and love? Let me tell you a story. One of the most significant writing workshops I ever took part in was titled “Finding the Story.” It was run by screenwriter Gill Dennis, most famous for his script for the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line. In the workshop, Gill provided three cues, and we were to write scenes from our own past that those prompts suggested. The prompts were, in order: Moment of Greatest Fear Moment of Greatest Shame I Love You … https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/13/when-friday-the-13th-meets-valentines-day/ #CRAFT #REALWORLD #Writinglife #character #characterarc

In the Beginning It’s February, we’re on day 5,392 of snow/bitter cold/ice/biting wind (let’s not even get into politics), and all I want to do is lose myself in reading a great book. And yet I have picked up and put down three different books without getting sucked into any of them. Is it my current frame of mind, or is it the books? https://writerunboxed.com/2026/02/11/in-the-beginning-3/ #CRAFT #REALWORLD #adviceforwriters #KathleenMcCleary #novelopenings
