Wooly rhinos roamed Wales 120,000 years ago, and their teeth have been found in a cave beneath Pembroke Castle. Wogan Cavern has already produced hippo bones, mammoth remains & stone tools from early Homo sapiens. A five-year University of Aberdeen dig starts in May. Britain's prehistory is crazy. 🦛 Full story: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8ejjw7377jo #history #uk #britain #wales #archaeology

Will be sold to highest bidder - collection broken up, histories lost & disappearing into private collections, some overseas... Issue of legacy collections - where owners or heirs don't want things, will only get more common... #Archaeology #Treasure #Detecting 🏺 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c70drpjqvdgo

2,500-year-old mass grave sheds light on burial practices in Judah during Persian period A team of Israeli and German archaeologists has found the skeletal remains of up to 89 individuals, most of them infants and young children, inside a repurposed ancient cistern at Tel Azekah, a site about 19 miles southwest of Jerusalem, in what researchers say is the first discovery of its kind in Israel. #MassGrave #Discovery #Archaeology #ExcavationinIsrael #Bible #Jerusalem Source: https://www.christianpost.com/news/mass-grave-sheds-light-on-burial-practices-in-judah.html #Faith #ChristianNews #Bible

The oldest canal in the United Kingdom is nearly 2,000 years old. The Fossdyke Navigation was built by the Romans in around 120 CE and is 18.1 km long. It runs from the River Trent at Torksey to the River Witham in Lincoln, and is still used today. #Archaeology

Fishing about 3,500 years ago 🎣 Bronze Age copper-alloy fishing hooks, from the pile dwelling settlement at Meersburg-Haltnau/Lake Constance. #Fish was a staple diet for pile dwellers - caught with hooks and lines, nets, harpoons, and fish traps. 📷 Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg #archaeology

Things used in everyday life are the real archaeological treasures! This sewing needle was made from animal bone some 13,000 years ago. Some designs simply don't need to be improved, because form and functions were perfectly matched from the start Length: 5.6cm 📷 Landesmuseum Württemberg #archaeology

Experts examine 150-year-old bottle of booze from a buried 1800s mining town. When we say examine, we mean what are their Mastodon handles, because you know what they did there https://www.wcax.com/2026/03/04/experts-taste-150-year-old-bottle-booze-buried-1800s-mining-town/?tbref=hp&utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #science #archaeology #history #vintage #Utah

Ancient Greece’s most famous oracle was just high on gas fumes. From @popsci@universeodon.com: "The Oracle of Delphi, also known as the Pythia, likely inhaled ethylene to enter her famous trance." https://flip.it/sAbjVa #Archaeology #Greece #Science

Oh, you're into 4,800-year-old Egyptian pyramids? That's cool, that's cool. I was into old pyramids, too, before they got so mainstream. I've moved on now to 5,200-year-old canoes dragged from a Wisconsin lake, but you probably haven't heard of them https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20260223-the-ancient-us-discovery-predating-the-pyramids?utm_source=fark&utm_medium=website&utm_content=link&utm_campaign=fark&ICID=ref_fark #archaeology #history #indigenous #cool #Wisconsin

12,000-year-old elk hide, sewn with hand-spun cord, found in an Oregon cave. Likely the world's oldest known sewing. Our nan claims she's been at it just as long. 🧵 Dry caves preserve everything. Ancient humans were extraordinary. What do you reckon they were making? https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/these-12000-year-old-scraps-of-elk-hide-may-be-the-worlds-oldest-known-examaples-of-sewing-180988200/ #caving #history #americanhistory #ancienthumans #archaeology
